Engine ping 2000 GT

Hi, new to this forum, I have a 2000 Mustang GT 4.6L Auto that seems to have excessive engine ping over approx 1/2 throttle. First I thought it was the Jet Power Programmer, took it out, same problem. Have been using premium fuel. Any thoughts on this or anyone else with a similar problem? Thanks.

Definately not engine knock. to be honest, 4.6s lack compression! the ping can be from mis aligned timing belt tho, which i highly doubt. I am not good with pings, so take my advice at your own risk.

stop using premium. switch back to regular. premium gasoline is for motors that make aobut 10 or 10.5:1 compression, typically. i'd advance your timing a couple degrees too, just to be safe. you're just asking for detonation here.

Re: Engine ping 2000 GT

GT's don't have any need for premium. Hell, Ford says premium only on my Cobra (higher compression), but it'll run fine on 85 without any detonation.

Re: Engine ping 2000 GT

Make sure your EGR valve is functioning properly.

Too high octane won't immediately cause detonation, and I'm scratching my head over why someone would recommend advancing your timing when you are already pinging.....

Anyway, get the EGR checked, and pull codes, and see what you come up with.

Are you sure it's an engine ping? Could be a small exhaust leak.

I was just thinking that.

Using premium fuel should not cause detonation on that car.

If I'm not mistaken the JET programmer advances your timing. Even though you said you took out the programmer, I would still check the timing just in case. I'm not too familiar with this programmer, but I guess it could alter your stock settings even though it's been taken off.
