engine won't keep accelerating when gas pedal is pressed

i own a 99 ford ranger with 46k miles on it.

It is acting very strange. when i start the car it begins to idle very rough and usually stops. If i press the gas pedal down it revs up but then stops and rerevs and keeps doing that cycle. I changed the fuel filter and it still does it. I have filled the car 2 times since this started up with high quality gas. i added fuel cleaner and injector cleaner.

I thought it could be a vacuum leak however this problem is intermittant.

after a random time of this consant reving while my foot is flooring the gas it will all of a sudden start acting normal and rev fine.

can a vacuum leak be intermittant? it could be running fine for about 40 mins then start up with the rev die rev die thing.

any ideas before I try to take it into the shop?

Re: Re: engine won't keep accelerating when gas pedal is pressed

man i just got back from the mechanic shop. IT was the Mass air flow sensor and throttle control sensor.

481 dollars later I have a workin car. I am not a mechanic but I am mechanicly able to do alot. I have put in replacement brakes or overhead cam shaft and rockers but this stuff kills me! I have no way to check some things and I hate having to drop 500 bucks to fix 230$ worth of parts..

OK now that I am done griping with todas car tech, I say many thanks to all for helping me out.
