I inherited a powder blue '88 Delta 88 from my grandparents (I call it the Blue Haired Cruiser). It only has ~73k miles on it so I fugured it would be worth holding on to. The check engine light is on and the garage says it is showing a code 41, which is a cam sensor failure. How difficult is this to replace? Any input is appreciated. 7/20 Found and replace the sensor, but still have code 41. Disconnected battery. HELP!

Re: Code 41 cam sensor
There is 2 scenarios. I had this same problem with my 91 olds 88 royale.
#1. You replace the cam position sensor, the problem goes away. #2. You replace the cam position sensor and the problem doesnt go away. This probably means you have the same problem I had. The cam position sensor magnet has fallen apart. Its mounted on the timing gear and from the outside which means you have to pull off the front of the engine to replace it. While you are in there you might as well replace the timing chain and gears. If you can do it yourself, its not too expensive. its explained in a haynes manual how to do it. |
