Check Engine Light On

I'm posting here for my brother, he has a '97 Grand Am GT.

Couple of nights ago the Check Engine light came on.

About a month ago he started leaking gas somewhere around the back of the car. Not alot but just a little over night some seems to seep out. He is pretty sure that it must be leaking at or near the top of the tank itself though he's not 100% sure.

With gas obviously leaking somewhere there must be air getting in the system too.

My question is, would this air possibly getting in turn his check engine soon light come on?

I've heard of some people having the light come on even if the gas cover is loose.

He took it to the mechanic yesterday and the mechanic's computuer wouldn't read the car's computer at all. The mechanic's computer worked on a couple dodges that day though so there's a question as to if maybe the car's computer has a problem or if it's something to do with the mechacnic's.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Check Engine Light On

Was the gas tank removed for service on the fuel pump lately? If so, the seals or the clamp might not have been tigtened up good. Leaking gas needs to be check and traced.

Is the Check Engine Light still ON?
