Well, my friend has an Elantra GT and it's loaded with problems. Most of them idling problems. They've replaced so many things, and it still doesn't run right. From transmission modules, software upgrades, fuel stuff, and a gazzilion recalls!

I have an 04 GT. I love it. Very nimble car...could use more power but fun on twisties just the same. I got an auto...but If they had a GT sedan on the lot with 5spd I would have definately gone that direction. I have had some issues but have had all resolved. In retrospect, this car has had fewer issues than any other car I've owned. Since owning this car I have had one recall. Very minor one which was fuel line related, less than 15min to fix. I haven't seen any software issues...this could be an aftermarket issue with your friends car.

For the $ the Elantra GT is a bargin. JD Powers just gave Hyundai a satisfaction and quality rating equal to Toyota. Now if they could get the kind of resale value Toyota has I'd be happier.

Good Luck,
Jason

Re: New Elantras good?

I bought a 2001 in 2001 and it has far exceeded my expectations. I only had to bring it back to the dealer for a vibration when the air conditioner was on. (It tookl four tries to figure it out.) After that it has been running great. ( i have the auto and find it adequate for my purposes)

Cheers
