Yes, RX-7's do have rotary engines. And to learn all you need to know go here:http://www.howstuffworks.com/rotary-engine.htm

...the apex seals are difficult to maintain, LOTS of vacuum lines, uneven cooling, were some of the issues with the last Mazda rotories. I agree, its not better, its not worse, its just different.

Yeah, it just still amazes me that they have 250hp from a 1.3

that's not yet official cus the RX-8 isn't released, but that is the published HP #s. how's that for incomplete efficiency.

Yes rotarys are different but you have got to admit that they do make unbelievable horse power for such a small capacity engine.
I have have had a few rotarys, i have pumped lots of money into all my cars. I have even been circuit racing my RX-3 for quite a few years as well. I think the best thing about the rotary engine is the physical size of the motor. (basically a 4 gallon drum for a 2 rota) and there light weight. They are a cheap form of horse power for what they are. (dont get me wrong all forms of motor sport are expensive but the rotary is still resonable for the power to money spent ratio). You cant really relate to the problems of the old rotary engines where the APEX seals and water seals used to shit them selves before 20000 miles. Mazda has pumped a lot of money into making the rotary a very reliable car, and has proven that by win lots of prestigious awards like the LE MANs race where they killed the porches, jags and other proto types and then after that victory they band them. I have the respect for all types of motors but i think you cant go past a ROTA :flash:

ok thanks.
Yeah they do produce amazing horsepower for the size/compacity. But I like the honda's inline-4s better

I enjoy rotaries...
But i've heard horror stories abot 13Bs going ka-boom... A friend has rebuilt his 3 different times... But..if properly built and maintained - rotaries ownz j00! Type-R -- i enjoy hondas i-4s as well...but a nice, Nissan i-6 TT is much more preferred

Oh ho... Rotarys ARE good. Lightweight. Produce nice horsepower. The only draw back is that they have to be maintained because the engine "rotates" and this creates frictio so it has to be constantly maintained for top notch performance.

Texan
What about the crank shaft that rotates, and what about the piston sliding up and down the bore doesnt that create friction.??????????? Can you imagine how much force there is needed to move the piston up the bore then stop it (although for a split second) then send the piston back down the bore again. The forces being pushed on the conrod and crank shaft are huge. The rotary doesnt have these huge changes in force direction because they rotate in the same direction all the time, and there for can produce higher horse power, REV higher and accelerate faster than a motor of equivalent size. (Remebering a 13B is only 1.3ltr).
