tell me what ya know

hey guys - i found a new love - an RX-7. i have been car shopping for a while now, and just recently starting reading everything i can about the RX-7 and how the rotary engine works, i want to get rid of my fucking rice burner civic for one. have some questions though

which Rx-7's are turboed? i have looked a couple of them, i am interested in the last gen, 93 and 94's, and the rpms are fucked up - im talking about redline - one was an auto and the other was a stick - so whats up with redline/turbo in those cars?

i would be keeping it stock for a while, and i heard the rotary engines have problems with busting seals and shit cuz they rev so high? if you get a nonturbo - if there is - will that prolong the engine life errrr make a lower maintence car - untill i buy a turbo for it?

and i am 18 - will my insurance kick my ass hardcore?

any and all info would help me out soo much - and remember i JUST started reading more about them - so forgive my stupidity - the reading has mostley been about HOW the wenkel engine works . . .
THANKS!

Re: tell me what ya know

rice burner civic....so it runs on rice?

do some research and check out the car u want to get 1st...rx-7's can be very expensive to fix if u pick the wrong car....IMO i think a newbie to the 7's should stick to non-turbo...it'd be lower maintenance and u have less of a chance of messing something up....but the seals mess up...i guess from prolonged wear and people dogging the car...but hopefully an expert will give u a better answer

I am not sure what your state laws are, but in VA there is a non insured motorist fee ($500), and its the way to go if your license isnt too good ( i have -38 points) The way i see it is that blue book for an rx7 isnt nearly as high as you are going to put in it anyway and they would more than likely total it for anything, just make sure under no circumstances you hit another car, obviously you would avoid accidents anyway, but if you have to hit a tree instead of a car thats just the way it is lol. Some jack ass pretends their back hurts and your wage will be garnished for a little while. and dont let anyone ever borrow your car heh

BTW this is something that pisses me off, i have never claimed a dollar from insurance, never been in a wreck on the books, why should my insurance suck from speeding? should it not be that after you claim something your "risk" goes up a lot and speeding it should not affect so much?

Re: tell me what ya know

I'd say start out with a 89-91 sen gen N/A. It comes stock with 160 hp and 140 tq. They tend to last a long time. A friend of mine owns a rx-7 and it's over 200K and pulls just as hard as it always has.

Re: tell me what ya know

thanks soyo - but my dad is the one financing me - and approved of one - but only if it has low miles, and i found a couple that only have around 50-60k, the last gen, 93 and 94 - i am not going to do really anything to it for a little while . . . its a nice classic car - and i don't want to risk fuckign something like that up - too nice to! i will probably do exhaust, intake downpipes, and that basic stuff eventually - and im not sure about the turbo

Re: tell me what ya know

by the way - how fast is a 93 or 94 rx-7 with a turbo and without -

just give me an average turbo time - i know that it varies with amount of psi and shit - but a rough guess would be cool

Re: tell me what ya know

All '93 - '95's were turbo. I hate these how fast questions but... probably around mid 13's to low 14's in the 1/4.

Fast enough. It will have more power than you know what to do with, especially from jumping from a civic. When you get one, make sure that you keep some money in the bank, so if any problems occur (and they will), you will be able to fix it. Also, be ready for a new motor, just in case. It isnt going to be cheap to maintain, but well worth it IMO. My next car will be an FD.

Re: Re: tell me what ya know

Second or first gen RX-7's are the best way to start out. A 89-91 Turbo II would be plenty fast for you and they are cheaper then a FD, less complex, and a blast to drive. With a few bolt-on's the Turbo II can be as fast as the FD. It's more of a sleeper also.

Re: tell me what ya know

a 93 with 50-60k miles? sounds like it was a town driven car and not used much... thats bad for a rotary... and when you look at the fact that non-turbo rotaries like mine will go well over 200k with good care then mine is not high mileage at all, and its a lot of highway miles(I hate downtown traffic)

EDIT: sorry not trying to be like "BUY MY CAR!" just giving you an example of something else to look at, but like someone already said, the non-turbo is the best way to start out
