91 Towncar Overdrive problem

The grommet that is used to hold the TV cable to the throttle linkage broke. I replaced it but now it want shift into overdrive leaving the motor to rev up as if it were in neutral. The car drives out fine with it in D without overdrive. I adjusted the cable by setting the sliding block to the throttle arm in the idle position and the transmission in neutral per the Hayes manual.

The transmission was serviced 10,000 miles ago.
Anybody know what is wrong?
Thanks for any help.

Randy

Re: 91 Towncar Overdrive problem

Okay let's say the tranny is dead. Is the dealer the best place to get it rebuilt?

Yes... I've heard that when the TV cable is out of whack, mis adjusted, grommet shot, etc.. the trans. fries quickly. I dont have any direct experience with this problem but I've heard the OD band burns up and the result is exactly what you describe.

As for rebuild, who's reliable, honest, farily quick, reasonably priced..
I havn't a clue.

I imagine the best deal would include a realy beefy guarentee since you can't really see what was done to your trans.

I have seen the OD band for sale in a few different places, including eBay.

Re: 91 Towncar Overdrive problem

Thanks Steven I think that is the problem the OD bands are shot.

Any other owners out there I would replace that part now. I understand there is a brass one available aftermarket. A $5 investment could save $1500
