Talking 1996/1997 Camaro SS or 1998-2002 camaro SS?????

OK....I have a problem and I want some opinions. I'm going to be getting a new car pretty soon and I have been a Camaro freak all my life so I decided to get one even though the insurance will eat me alive. I can't decide between 1996/1997 Camaro SS or 1998-2002 Camaro SS. I want the 6-speed of course with T-tops and all the bells and whistles. But I can't decide between the LS-1 or LT-1. Both have ram air on the SS, the LT-1 has 305 horsepower and the LS-1 has 320-330 depending on the SLP options. Any Camaro owner is going to modify his car, what I want to do is a complete header/muffler system, a chip, and a K&N intake sytem when I get it. So what I want to know is which is a better engine, I want a high top speed and low quarter mile time. Styling wise I love both body styles and the interior is basically the same besides the 1996 SS has the older interior. So if I can get some opinions I would really appreciate it.

If you like the looks on both and Price is not the Issue, the 98+ is the way to go! The LS1 is a great design and responds very well to mods.

98, LS1 is the engine to beat, even if the styling is worse than the 97, IMO...

thats true. either is a good way to go, the LS1 is a better performance option. basically go with which ever floats your boat...

Re: 1996/1997 Camaro SS or 1998-2002 camaro SS?????

personally on mine my 99' z28 feels like it has "energy", you know like its ready to speed any time you push it, the 95' z28 sounds like a beast, but when you push it it goes crazy! in my opionionthe 95' the interior and exterior is sooo much better than the 99'... if your interested would u want to buy my 99' z28 for 10.5k?

ZO6 Intake

The 01 and 02' SS have the Z06 Intake already from the factory installed on them. You can make 500 HP with only Heads, cam and headers.

Re: 1996/1997 Camaro SS or 1998-2002 camaro SS?????

I'd go with a 96 or 97 SS... Their value in time will be so much higher than the later ones because they were NOT converted by GM, and they made less in 96 & 97 they any other year. You see more of the 98 and up SS's then you do the early ones.

I have driven both a 98 SS and my 96 SS, and to tell you the true I still rather have the LT1 over the LS1... The LS1 has lots of power, but it sounds so tinny when you rev it up. At least with the LT1 it sounds powerful when you get on it. And the 98 and up styling sucks, it looks like a fricken Sebring.

LT1 in the 96 and 97 SS's is 310 hp with the performance exhaust.

97' Ss Lt4

Some of the 97's went through SLP and have the LT4, I believe 335 or 340HP 30th edition. They were orange w/racing stripes. I think????

Re: 97' Ss Lt4

Yep they made 110 total LT4 SS's in 97. 100 for the US and 10 for Canada... And they were all 30th ann white w/orange stripes. 330 hp with 6spds. Except one prototype was hugger orange with white stripes.

Re: 1996/1997 Camaro SS or 1998-2002 camaro SS?????

97' anniv. ss might be worth more than the 96' in the future also but i would take the 96 over the 97 because i hate the ls1 model inside in the 97+ but i love 93-96 its sooo badass looking! i can compare mine to a newer model and show why if anyone doesnt beleive older looks better... and also the sound of the 98+ has been pussifyied, i wouldnt take it over my 95' not even 02' ss anniv. i like it that much, and man i dont think you will be dissapointed with 96' ss... the torque machine... with perfect interior...
