Low fuel light problem
Oops, I think i should have postd on this main thread. Soory. I post this again.
Dear Honda 99 (or anyone who experienced a similar problem) I am new to this forum. I really enjoyed your detailed information above. My problem is a little different. I believ the fuel gauge works right but the low fuel light doesn't go off even if i feel up the tank. This is not a serious problme but it's annoying. If it simply doesn't turn on, it's better to me. i can live without it. It doesn't go on or off, it's always on. So, it may not be alternator, right? Then, a possibility is a bad fuel sending unit? But the gauge is fine. so,???? I need your help. Since replacing it must be very costy and this is real minor trouble, i don't wanna spend such a big money. I will truly appreicate any comment/suggestions. |

Re: Low fuel light problem
I’m not sure why low fuel level light is on, it could be bad sensor. Sometimes manufacturers set up circuit in such way so if something fails it put warning signal. Just imagine this; sensor fails and you don’t that you got problem, you’ll most likely run out fuel without any indication.
Low level sensor work like switch, when there is plenty fuel in tank this switch is open (no light), when fuel get low enough sensor feels it and closes circuit (light is on). In cars circuits are simple; when circuit closes it closes to ground (car’s body). So, if you have wire that have bad insulation and it touches ground you will get light on (low fuel light), sort of bypass. You need to get to connector at gas tank and look at wires and see if there are any problems with wire providing voltage to low level sensor, its light green with red stripe or red bands. Try to jiggle wire loom and see if light still on, if it goes off & on while you jiggling wires you definitely have wire with insulation problem. Then you can try to disconnect wires from fuel tank and see if light goes away, if it goes away most like likely you have bad low fuel sensor. Turn ignition off before disconnecting then turn it on once you disconnect wires. Low fuel sensor and fuel level sensor are in one unit, so if you have bad low fuel sensor you need to replace entire fuel level sending unit. Unit cost about $40 and replacement isn’t that complicated, it seems like you already know how to replace it. Cheaper solution to your problem is to remove light bulb out of gauge cluster, but there is potential problem of running out of fuel. |

Re: Low fuel light problem
Thanks a lot Honda 99.
Would it be easy to remove gauge panel and access to gauge cluster and find the bulb for low fuel light? Do you have experience? If so, could you teach me how to? Thanks again |

Re: Low fuel light problem
i never removed gauge cluster by myself, but so it done, and it was easy. just few screws to undo on trim panel and few screws on gauge cluster itself.
don't be frighten when you see FORD logo on gauge cluster |

Question: so if the fuel gauge is NOT working like mines (91 Accord LX), does that mean the low fuel light will not work also? or will it? I just got it so I dont know yet but i have filled it up and I know its gotta be coming up on empty. I hope that the light does come on and if so I wont really worry about the gauge

Re: Low fuel light problem
there are two circuits; one to fuel level and other one for low fuel level indicating light. but its same floater that work for both circuits, so if its stuck somewher and it doesn't move, both indicators will not work.
