Best Car Mag

Ok I don't know about some people but for me picking out the best street car mag is kinda hard to do. There's a million to pick from and I really don't have the time to read each one. So what are some peoples favorite mags? which one has good info in it? I could care less if it has ricers in it.

Here's my top five.

#1: Grassroots Motorsports (GRM) - It's a bi monthly mag, but it's chock full of road racing tech articles and info on racing YOU can do. Not ALMS/Grand-Am/Trans-Am stuff, but real world Autocross and SCCA club racing. They're all about going racing on a budget, doing it yourself, and using creativity and hard work to overcome cubic dollars. Their most famous project car is the infamous Ro-Spit; a Triumph Spifire with a Mazda 13B rotary engine.

#2: Automobile Magazine - Forget Motor Trend or Car & Driver, Automobile and it's staff of holier than thou experts give you not only the straight scoop on the latest automotive news, but give it to you with unyielding honesty. There's no lip service to manufacturer buzzwords or "new models". What's good is good. What's crap is crap. And they're more than willing to tell you about it.

#3: Sports Car International - purely an enthusiast magazine, SCI is all about enjoying motoring. Whether it's the hottest cars of the future, or the brilliant stars of the past, SCI gives wonderful insight into what makes driving enjoyable.

#4: Sport Compact Car - SCC is one of the few import mags that goes in tongue-in-cheek and accepts that there's more than one way to skin a cat. Instead of getting caught up in "lifestyle" stuff like Super Street or other similar import mags, SCC sticks to what really matters; making your car go faster and look better doing it. It's really all about the cars.

#5: Road & Track - the gentleman's auto mag, R&T has been the gold standard of motoring journalism as literature. Especially the ungodly cool Salon articles that examine the very heart and soul of vintage cars. The Salon on the Chapparal 2F stands out in my mind as one of the coolest things I've ever read. They're not quite as intense with their reviews as other magazines, but they're more about enjoying cars than picking them apart.

Leave that to Automobile.

I like Motortrend and Car and Driver.....they work with the cars stock and compare them under controlled situations so nothing is biased and give you their genuine impressions and results.

Otherwise, i use AF.

Re: Best Car Mag

I read Roundel, SCC, Euro Tuner, Euro Car, and tend to stay away from Motor Trend, Car and Driver, and the like. My expierience with those is that if a car can go 400mph, get 200mpg city, 250 higway, and fly, if it isn't made by chevy, its worthless.

Every now and then, Import Tuner has some nice eye candy, Super Street blows. It really depends on what types of cars your looking for and what you want the mag to cover.

Re: Best Car Mag

I personally like Sport Compact Car. They resist the super-duper-boeing-wing-wide-mouth-bodykit bullshit that has invaded almost every other sport compact and import mag out there. They are also not only a straight line mag: they do drifting, road racing, and rallying as well. Their project cars are alwas quite interesting, if not as oddball as grassroots motorsport's.

Import tuner is pretty much crap. I pick up each issue in the supermarket and look at their power pages (the only interesting part of the whole thing) then put it back. And just stay away from Super Street and the rest, my high school paper is better written and more mature than they are.

Re: Best Car Mag

Yeah, but I like the Max Boost comics, the chicks are pretty good, and like I said, every now and then, they have some nice eye candy car wise.

Cant really say you like Road and Track but not Car and Driver. Same thing, only difference is the fact that R&T is only sport, and C&D is sport and daily drivers. Both offer fair judgement of cars and are enjoyable to read. CD tends to prefer BMW, but who doesnt?
Also on my list would be Motor Trend, Sport Compact Car, Mustang and other fast fords, and occasionally super street (but some times even looking through it makes me crave soy sauce.)

Road & Track, from my point of view, has always had higher caliber "writers" as opposed to higher caliber columnists. No, Peter Egan is not Csaba Csere when it comes to writing a column about how CAFE regulations are screwing over manufacturers, but Egan can write incomparable prose about why we sports car owners will put up with brushing snow out of wire wheels for the sake of a quiet mid-winter's night drive.
