Hey all, I need some help,
I just bought a 2000 Jetta GLX VR6 yesterday (with 42000 kms on it) and as I was driving it home (after about 4 hours of driving, not all at once) the CEL came on and it flashed "Emissions Workshop!". Now I have searched and found out that it is most likely the MAF and that it is a common problem that should be under a warranty. I have 7 months left on the regular powertrain warranty and I bought an extra 2 years of an independent company's warranty. So am I going to have to pay for this? The car is only 1 day old (to me) and I have contacted the dealer to let them know, they set up the appointment. Also, will it be the MAF or something else like the O2 sensor? Thanks in advance! |

Re: Advice Needed
You never know what it is until you have the codes checked. Some AutoZone stores will scan it with a generic scanner for free. It usually doesn't say MAF failure though. You can post the results. Several VW dealers have a poor practice of charging a diagnostic fee even if it is a warranty item. Failed MAF's are common on your vehicle, but I don't remember if the VR6 is under the extended warranty. Are you covered under the basic warranty? If not then I would do the job yourself as you can use a 2.0 MAF, you just have to remove it from the outer housing for it to work (ithe sensor itself has the same Bosch part # and is alot cheaper). You can get them on-line for <$50.

VR6 is covered under the extended 7 yr warranty .. I just had my 2001 replaced a few months ago ... practically had to fight with the dealer on it though .. they gave me the old "we'll have to charge for a diagnostic anyway" until I told them I knew the part is under warranty and I was 99% certain it was the maf ( I had it vag-comm'd by an independent party)
VWOA may be getting better, but it's not passing onto the dealers I have contact with however
