I got an SLP COLD AIR INCUDTION PACKAGE FOR A 2001 Pontiac Trans AM WS6. I went to my mechanic to have it installed because I dont have time to do it myself. Anyways he told me he couldn't because its illegal. He said it wouldn't pass smogg. Is this true?

i wouldn't think so becuase all it does is take air from infront of the radiator into the airbox. why would that be illegal?

Re: Slp Cold Air Induction Illegal??
Technically it is illegal (depending on state) to alter/disable emission control systems installed on a car required to pass emissions testing. These include intake and exhaust mods that alter or defeat emission control mechanisms or devices.
I'm not saying that you can't find a qualified mechanic to do it because there are mechanics that will do it but legally they're not suppose to and can tell you so. Basically just try another mechanic |

Re: Slp Cold Air Induction Illegal??
One thing to remember, California is probably the strictest state as far as emmisions. He may just not want to take any chances on getting fined, just like I won't do any air conditioning work outside my shop. The goverment gets stupid with that stuff.

Re: Slp Cold Air Induction Illegal??
I live in CA and call around and the reason they wont install it is because it wont pass the smogg? I dont know how though because its just air?

Re: Slp Cold Air Induction Illegal??
They will say it won't pass smog just because their being asked to change an emissions tuned vehicle in the name of performance. More specifically a cold air intake will allow the engine to breath more air so it can burn more fuel, thus why it may or will not pass smog/emissions test. I don't live in Cali but from what I hear some cars won't pass smog test if their air filter is missing, now that's strict.

I can't see how thats possible(not passing w/o the air filter). I passed without an AIR Pump or an EGR Valve. With the one of the tunes I have saved for my car, I get really good gas mileage and pass the sniffer test. As far as the OBD2 scanner test...thats easy to pass with LS1edit or HPTuner

Re: Slp Cold Air Induction Illegal??
Depends on what state you live in and your car. Basically more air gives way to more fuel that gives way to more exhaust emissions. If your car is new and you remove the air filter your car is still going to be within it's legal limits. Now if your car is in need of a tune-up and is riding just above the legal limit and you then remove the air filter your car is going to fail.
