I have an extra one, (hatch pull down assembly) it should be easy to change out, i'll check and see if it works, if it does, i'll send it your way.

Oh, you may want to check the contacts, there should be four silver squares on a rectangular black piece by the hatch closing assemblies. Check and make sure those are clean and conducive. after that look down at the contacts that they will be touching and make sure those are nice and clean. If you have a hatch release button in your car check and make sure that it's not stuck down. On one of my firebirds my hatch wouldn't close for like 3 days and then it was fine.

Rear Hatch

I also have an '87 Firebird and I have had the motor replaced twice since within the past 20,000 miles (13 years). I'm convinced it's not the motor but something else. I hear that there is a reset button in there somewhere when the thing doesn't close but I have not been able to find it.

Is the latch in the up or down position? If it is down, then it's not going to catch the other half. Reach down with your finger and feel around for a small button that should trigger the motor and raise the latch into the up position.
