2001 Mustang V6

I have recently bought a 2001 v6 5 speed and have already purchased a dynamic racing intake and put it in and it sounds very good. I am looking to change everythig but the engine itself. The next step will probably exhaust. I am going to put duals on it. Any suggestions for getting the V8 sound out of it. Whether getting headers mufflers, what kind of exhaust is the the best? bassani, Borla, Flowmaster...x pipe h pipe? Ive heard that you dont need to get headers because it already has them but ive seen some shortie headers for $200. Another thing, if im planning on just driving this car around for fun and not dragging hardcore (just at the stoplight) which is better short tube or long tube headers. Next im looking for anyone in Arizona that has that Predator tuner or the Diablo Tuner that I may possibly borrow eh eh? Another thing im thinking about is what everyone thinks of superchargers on V6's. The car only has 35K on it so i dont think it will do too much damage to the engine but what do i know. Anyone know someone with a superchartged V6? Other than that, im putting the fog lights on. It already has the 17" torq thruster billet wheels. I need tires though (245/45r17's EXPENSIVE!) What exactly do under drive pulleys do? All that consists of is taking the belt off, taking the old pulley off, bolting the new ones on, and putting a new belt on? Same size belt? How does a different pulley add horsepower. The car is white with two blue lemans racing stripes, it has the flaming horse decal in the grill. What other mods can be done for looks and effect? I want a comp chip but thats down the list right now.WOW this is long. So 1) exhaust(maybe headers) 2) Pulleys 3) suggestions for supercharger.

1.)For exhaust, you never get your 6 to sound like an 8.Which is the best exhaust? It's personal perferance.Go to http://www.mustangexhaust.com/3.8sounds.htm
for some sound clips of different exhaust on a 3.8

2.)For pulleys, by reducing the size of your crankshaft pulley etc... your power robbing accessories turn slower thus giving you more HP.

3.)As far as the S/C goes, alot of people S/C their
v-6 but it's all up to you and how much you want to spend.

on that website, it has a dual exhaust and it says warlock which sounds real good. Any idea on the story behind that setup? So with the underdrive pulleys its an easy bolt off and bolt on? SO there will be a different size belt. So the supercharger will add what about 100 hp? And thats gonna run about $1500 w/o installation?

Yes that is warlock mufflers with a MAC o/r H pipe.

As far as the pulleys simply remove the belt, then unbolt the factory pulleys like the Crank Pulley,Water Pump Pulley and the Alternator Pulley.Install the underdrive pulleys in place of the factory pulleys that have been removed. You can Re-install the factory belt or in some cases a new belt.

And for the S/C the amount of HP ranges from the amount of psi/boost you want to run.The prices for a S/C ranges also.(alot more then $1500)

BTW I believe some Mustangs use stock hyperuetectic pistons which tend to be somewhat brittle and are prone to break under boost (usually from detonation). Many people adding an SC with more than 8 or 9 lbs of boost also add forged pistons (and rods) which are much stronger.
Just something to think about if you plan on running alot of boost.

Re: 2001 Mustang V6

I dont think ill be adding a supercharger or nos or anything like that. I think the first step is to get some pulleys. Who makes the best? Get all 3 or which? Are warlock mufflers street legal? I was reading something about unplugging it to make it legal or something. Also do i need to get headers? Some people have said that it already has them. But i think that they have limited flow. So im thinking MAC shortie headers, maybe true dual, maybe just the MAC v6 conversion, im still not sure and h pipe or x pipe. Should i stick the with y pipe and split into two at the rear? and then either the flowmaster 40 series mufflers or warlocks. Who should i buy through? With 2 1/2" tips?

For pulleys March and Mac are good brands.Yes you get all 3 pulleys.

For the exhaust go here: http://www.3.8mustang.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63637
to help you decide which mid pipe, headers and catback etc... that you wanna run.ALOT of info here.

Also check http://www.3.8mustang.com/multimedia/ for more V-6 exhaust clips.

Re: 2001 Mustang V6

iVE BASICALLY DECIDED TO GO WITH THE GT TAKE OFF EXHAUST SO I CAN GET RID OF THE Y PIPE. THEN IM ALMOST POSITIVE ILL GO WITH THE FLOWMASTER SUPER 40 SERIES MUFFLERS. ANYONE KNOW A CHEAP PLACE TO GET EITHER OF THOSE. IVE FOUND THE EXHAUST ON EBAY OR 190 SHIPPED, AND THE MUFFLERS RUN ABOUT 85 A PIECE SO... ANY DOWNSIDES TO THE FLOMASTER SUPER 40 SERIES OR JUST THE 40 SERIES? WHAT ABOUT SPINTECH MUFFLERS?

Re: 2001 Mustang V6

a V6 cannot and will never sound like a true raw V8 ever. on the flip side, get it to sound atleast as good as a GN! will never get that rumble of 4.6s or 5.0s.

Alright well thanks for the info. That really helped out my decision. Although dont you think i would of bought a GT if i wanted to? I bought a V6 for the insurance reasons and have a 2002 Jeep TJ with 37" swampers and a supercharged v6 and im paying about $60 a month because of adult rates. I dont want it to sound like a v8 i want a unique V6. But thanks

Re: 2001 Mustang V6

I'm a lil late on this one....been on vacation....
I like the procharger from ATI....procharger.com....bolt-on 285hp to the V-6...345hp if you go with their 11lb pulley....extra mod required with the bigger boost.
The predator will do you no good....go to diablos website....wont work...been there tried it and you cant write to the factory computer. GTstang helped me a month or two back on this....only way to write to your ford computer is to install an aftermarket computer....I'm looking into that so that I may use my laptop and software to tune the car...as for the chip, I went with diablo's delta chip...has a three way switch which: position 1: stock 2: perfomance and 3: sleep mode (shuts everything down...car cannot be started) good anti theft device...$230.
exhaust....longtube headers get the exhaust out faster than shortys.
manganflow sounds good, so does flowmaster....much better in my opinion is Borla...I have the borla....
someone up there said it will never sound like a V-8....I beg to differ.
It may not sound exactly the same as the GT's or Cobras but with my JBA headers, mac h-pipe and borla...everyone swears its a V-8.
pulleys....bah....i wouldnt do it if you are planning to boost it in some way....may run into cooling problems....pulleys are gonna slow down your water pump too and they say that you are not supposed to cut your alternators output more than 10% and some impede on this percentage. BTW a shop will have to do the pulleys...the crank pulley has to to be pulled off...very hard....special tool required.
Not that there arent others out there but the only headers with a one piece flange ( no warping issues) for the V-6 are made by JBA out of cali. but they are spendy $700+...all others have individual flanges that tend to warp. mac makes the only h-pipe i found for the V-6 $377.xx with tax. comes complete with hi-flow cats.
And finally...where are you in Arizona....I would check out AMP on University and around 40th ST...Tempe/Phoenix border....they specialize in mustangs....and have done all my work...and they have a grave yard....last i heard they had a set of fog lights for around $50....the dealer will rape you on those. =)
Hope this helped.

Re: 2001 Mustang V6

Well I went back to the diablo site....and found that you were correct...the predator does tune with the ford now....so cool....my bad...the only reason i got the delta chip was because the predator only worked at the time with GM and Dodge....learn somin new every day....may have to look into buying one of those lol.
