Insane Race

*Edit: Just adding in a warning that this is long but there are cliff notes at the bottom.

OK, was in my friends 94 Mustang GT out in the country heading up to another friends cabin for a party last night. Another buddy of ours was following in his new '04 Tiburon Tuscani. There is no one else on the highway (highway 1 an hour outside of Kamloops, BC) except a Mazda 3 sedan just ahead of us. As we got closer to the mazda I could hear what sounded like a performance exhaust but was hard to tell because the mustang is loud.

The mazda driver I guess saw us and sped up/slowed down ect.. to see if we would follow. We did but didnt try to pass or anything. Then the mazda turns off at the same exit we were just about to and comes to s stop at the light just after the exit. The road ahead was clear and straight with just a few farms around, it looked like it was a 1/4 mile or maybe a little less in a straight line until the road curved to climb the mountain (on the other side of which was a lake where my friends cabin is located).

We were behind the mazda at the light with the tiburon behind us when the mazda started reving up. It sounded pretty mean and we heard the whine of a turbo when it revved. We smelled a race so we pulled out into the empty oncoming lane beside the mazda, and the guy driving the mazda looks over with his girlfriend (Im assuming) and the both grin at us so we knew it was on.

*Note The mustang is set up for road racing with some of the mods including a turbo, new suspension, a performance driveshaft, ect.. Altogether I think hes put about 20k into the car and its fast and handles like a go cart The mustang owner is an good driver who has been going to auto x events for a few years now with his stang. He gets good times too.
The Tiburon is stock.

We all three cars take off at green, and much to our surpirse the mazda stayed with us all the way to the end of the straight (they were about at our door when we started braking for the curve and upwards climb ahead. My friend was sort of embarrassed and said
"this isnt a drag car." He took the first corner hard and then gunned it up the next short straight up the hill. I looked back and the mazda was still keeping up, just off our right rear wheel. The road we were one was like something WRC races are held on and after 10 minutes of white knuckle driving, the mazda was still right behind us. My friend was sweating like hell and cursing at this point. Then we came up to a sharp hairpin. We had to slow down too much to take the curve and the mazda screamed by us on the inside.

At this point I was fearing for my life as my friend was driving the stang to its limits trying to regain the lead and he almost lost traction on a few corners. Eventually we got an opportunity to pass them on a longer straight and stayed ahead until we crested the hill and had to turnoff onto a gravel road leading to the cabin. The mazda slowed down and honked at us and we waved back. The Tiburon caught up minutes later.

That was the first Mazda 3 that I had seen modified to race and I am very impressed. And if I had had a camera with me the video of tht race would have made me a rich man it was so crazy.

Cliff Notes: Me in and a friend in his modded 94 Mustang gt raced a Modded Mazda 3 sedan on a straight and up a side road that curved up a mountain for about 20-30 min. We barely won.

Re: Insane Race

I wonder what all was done to the mazda... I don't think they have too much aftermarket support, though you can do anything with enough money. Very nice race.

My honda may have less displacement than your coke bottle, but I'll race your coke bottle for $1000. Who says there's no replacement for displacement?

Thats what I was wondering. It was the first Mazda 3 I had seen modded and this one left an impression. The 3 is a new model though so it will be cool to see what people can do with the cars in the future.

Re: Insane Race

Like micro said, they are nice looking cars. And maybe they take well to modifications? No one seems to know much about them.
