Question how do you know if fuel pump needs to b changed? on a s-10 ('95)

My s-10runs ok but when in idle or park but sometimes ( not al the time) when I am driving it likes to backfire and in a sense sounds like a dog growling!!!! (best way toput it) I have done a complete tuneup as well as the fuel filter, I dont know how to test the fuel pressure but someone told me my fuel pump is bad, which i don't know how to change) so how can I tell if it is indeed the fuel pump???????? please help!!! is there a way to tell without test the pressure????

I have a '94 S10, and after looking at my old fuel pump, I thought "no one could get more miles from a pump than I did". I got over 160k miles. The only problems I had near the end was when turning left from a stop, the engine would starve for fuel for a second or two if it was below a quarter tank of fuel. The other (much closer to the end) was that it would run rough and die, then start right up again. The failure was caused by the brushes wearing through the segments on the rotor until about half of the segments were worn down to plastic. Brushes can't deliver power through plastic.

try the fuel relay first. if your truck is running then the fuel pump is working. you have to drop the tank to get to the pump. the pump will run you about $70 if its the Vortec. good luck.

p.s. its recommended not to run the fuel down that low. it picks up all the garbage in the bottom of the tank (rust, dust, dirt, etc) and sends it threw the pump into the engine... not a good idea.

depending on the year of the truck it may have a bad connection on the ground or a bare spot on the other wires
