96 SSEi high mileage
Howdy folks!
New to this forum. I just acquired a beautiful 1996 SSEi. I will get pics later. Only two things concern me about the vehicle. One is that it has 186,000 miles on it, but for that it seems to be mechanically sound. I've owned it about 24 hours and I've put 350 miles on it today. It ran like a champ at 90mph on the interstate with the cruise set and the AC blowing cold on a 95 degree day. But I can't help but wonder if I'll be facing any routine maintenance issues (timing belt, etc.) anytime soon? The other small concern is that when I acquired this vehicle the belt was off of the supercharger. It runs fine this way (ain't no slouch w/o it), but I'll buy a belt and see if the thing works. I suspect that it doesn't, or makes a lot of noise, and that is why the previous owner may have taken the belt off. Are there any issues to running it w/o the blower? I understand that replacement superchargers are pretty pricey. I've found a website or two for replacement (rebuilt) superchargers. Can anyone recommend one over the other? Also, are rebuild kits available for the shadetree mechanic? Thanks in advance for your replies. Oh and one more thing...what is the SECURITY light on the radio for. Is there a built-in security system I'm unaware of. I just found the HUD this evening so there's no telling what I don't know about it. Someone turn me on to all the cool things this gadgetmobile will do. Texan_in_exile |

My guess is that something will have to be done about the oil in the SC if it hasn't been used for a while. If it is broke, I don't see any harm in leaving it disconnected, but I am not an expert on the issue (incidentally, I ran my old Volvo 740 with the turbo by-passed for several years with no ill affects).
The security light on the radio, if it is the factory radio, is likely the "Theftlock" light. Theftlock renders the radio unusable if the battery is disconnected while it is engaged (or in the case of theft, when power is removed). If the light is flashing and you do not know the disengagement code, you're up a famous creek if the car looses all power as far as the radio goes; at least until you get it to the dealership. |

Re: 96 SSEi high mileage
How funny! My '88 Volvo 740 GLE is what I was driving before I bought the Bonneville. I'm looking for an engine and tranny for it.

The radio works fine. Sometimes a light comes on that says SECURITY. I haven't had it long enough to say exactly when it comes on or why.

If you're talking about the Security light on the dash it is for both an audible entry alarm as well as the VATS system built into your key.
M Jarvie has already given great details of the Theftlock system which is only for the radio. |

Yep that's the light I'm talking about. Okay, thanks for keeping me straight here.
This car is really impressive. I'm very happy with it. However I did price a new set of performance tires today. OUCH! Gotta pay to play huh? LOL Texan_in_exile |
