Engine Monitors for teenage drivers
Can anyone recommend an engine monitor to install on a pickup to monitor the driving habits of teen aged driver? I understand there are chips or modules you can install that will tell the speed, RPM, etc that the vehicle has been driven to download to a desktop or laptop computer. Thanks.

i would suggest either sitting the lad down and chatting with him, if it's a concern. if worse, than take his vehicle away........
i would imagine the cost of the software to obtain that information from the vehicel's "black box" would be pricey. no "devices" known to get what you want.........

They do make a recorder, I know I saw it implimented in a fleet of delivery vehicles. Would record max RPM, max speed, max accelerator pedal travel, etc, so the bosses could monitor the employees' driving. Try a google search.

Re: Engine Monitors for teenage drivers
I know that Viper Alarms has a GPS system. You can track how fast the truck has gona and even where its been just by going online or even from a cell phone. Thats quite expensive though. Being a teen driver myself.. I would just let him go...a few speeding tickits will slow him down.

Re: Engine Monitors for teenage drivers
I agree with the ticket thing. Also, is the teenager paying for his own truck?? Cuz i know that makes a world of difference, when teenagers have to work hard to make the money for the truck they're not going to jeopordize it by speeding or bad driving habits. I know because i pay for EVERYTHING (monthly payments, insurance, parts, repair, etc.)
So, instead of you spending a lotta money to monitor the driving, let him do whatever he wants, and if he choses bad driving habits, pass the payments off to him.... he will quickly straighten up when realization hits that it's now his own money he is wasting. |

Re: Engine Monitors for teenage drivers
let him know ahead of time what the punishment will be. that will make the tickets sting a little more, but he won't have any reason to say it is unfair (even though he will)

Re: Engine Monitors for teenage drivers
Thank yall for the advice, yes, I've had the talk and he's paying for 1/2 the vehicle. But I know they can still be stupid and think they are bullet proof. Let's just pray he won't be stupid and irresponsible, as all parents of teenagers do.

Re: Engine Monitors for teenage drivers
last week a brand new 04 Envoy came into the shop. It wouldnt move in gear.
Turns out the whole rear end grenaded, I mean GRENADED, the whole rear axle had to be replaced. Their 17 yr old son had been driving it, don't know how it happened, looks like he had the motor revved up to about 6000rpms and threw it in drive. |

There is a tool called the CarChip that will do just what you are looking for. I found one at http://www.industrialtoolstore.com/a...-200126424.htm but have not tried it myself.

Re: Engine Monitors for teenage drivers
I am 21 years old and own a '02 silverado that I have had since new and that I pay for my self and it is my baby! I treat it with care and caution that I never would have if: 1. I didn't pay for it, or 2. If it was a fast car. It's a truck and I drive it like a truck. To treat a truck like a car is the ultimate crime against nature. Please make sure that he is glad to own a truck for a truck, and I don't think you will have any problems.
