Question Why does it do this?

Hello,
I just purchase a 94 Grand Cherokee Laredo from a friend. There are a couple of things that's wrong with it. I knew this before I even bought it. Anyway, the truck starts just fine, when I put it on drive or reverse, it gets rough idle and just dies, then when I start it up again, I put it on drive, I press on the gas and it seems like its hesitating to go and finally does. Like tranny slipping or something (crossing my fingers on this one).
Pls. pls. pls. help.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, I just checked the code (key on\off trick). I think I read it right, I got 3, 5, 5 or it could be 3, 10. Can somebody pls. tell me what these codes mean. Again its for 94 GC Laredo.

Thanks.

Re: Why does it do this?

U probably got a 12 & a 55 Both are nothing to worry about. Check crankshaft position sensor, Vaccum fittings, IAC motor.or even clean out the throttle body. not all problems give codes.

Thanks for responding.
I have been emailing Dale as well and he said the same thing IAC. So I cleaned THE SLOT IN THE THROTTLEBODY, BUTTERFLY ETC. real good but still the same problem. How do I do a test on it and where can I get this part for good price? What is the price range?

take it to auto zone for free code reading or search the internet for the codes. sounds like a vacuum leak to me, or maybe throttle position sensor (13 bucks)

Re: Why does it do this?

Which engine do you have? There is an updated IAC part #53030657

Re: Why does it do this?

Engine misfire: Rough idle and stalling can be traced to a defective idle-air-control motor. (1993-94)

I was having the same problem on my '93 4.0L with the rough idling and choking. if you gradually accelerate it goes fine, but when put in gear or u step on it it sputters and dies. My fix was a new ignition coil at Autozone for $30. Runs like a champ.
