1993 ford probe GT won't start

I just aquired a 1993 Ford Probe GT from my sister, the car hasn't been run in about a year. her husband said that the fuel pump had quit and thats why they stopped driving it. the fuel cutoff switch was on in the dash and you couldn't hear the fuel pump running at all. we jumped the connectoin at the inertia switch in the trunk, and can hear the fuel pump running, but only when we ground the fuel pump at the self test connection up fron where you hook it up to the computer. the car is also backfiring really bad when we turn it over. The gastank was completely empty when we picked it up, and the batery was dead. does anyone know what i should do next. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1993 ford probe GT won't start

1993 and 1994 ford probe models mays experience a hard start or no start. this is prevalent in probes built between 4/16/92 and 8/25/94 with cruise control but without anti-lock brakes.
if the fuel shut off lamp illuminates during starting the problem can be trace to corrosion and /or an open circuit or short to ground at splice 102 circuit 9, whitch runs under the driver side headlight.
the following steps are required to eliminate the problem

1 do a voltage drop test acroos the curcuit 9 from the 30 amp f/p inj fuse to the alternator s terminal, the PCM power rely and the fuel pump rely.
2 if there is a voltage drop prestent of .2 volt or more , it means there is a fault in the 102 splice.
3 remove the drivers side headlight and cut open the harness
4 if corrosion is present , cut out the bad section of wiring and resolder the ends.
5 for an open circuit , compete the circiut as require.
6 cut open the curciut to slide on the heat shrink tubing, resolder, sealing the connection.
7 reinstall the headlight.
