1999 taurus - wet floor after heavy rain

After sitting out (not driving) in a heavy rain the floor and floor mat on the front passenger side are wet and smell like old cardboard. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Same problem, only on drivers side.

Check the weather stripping around the door, also take a piece of paper and starting at the top near the door jamb hold the paper and close the door and see if you can pull it out, open door move paper to the next paper width and try it again do this all around the door. Also sit inside and have someone spray a hose (on high) and see if its leaking anywhere around the door/windshield.

My door needed adjusting, ($20.00 @ body shop) now I have a small leak comeing from inside the plastic molding dripping above the hood release. I put silicone sealer around the weather strip, and the windshield but still can't find it. Good luckwith yours, I'll keep looking for my leak...

I have a 96 Taurus and had the same problem. The rain was leaking in from a broken plastic screw - there are several of them along the window line below the front window. They are cheap and break often. I have had three replaced in the last two years.

There is a recall from Ford for the fresh air inlet under the wiper cowl. There is a foam sealer that leaks. The water travels down the air inlet to the air box and leaks onto the passenger floor. This year of Taurus should have the recall apply.

Recall sites given below or you can go by the Ford dealer and ask them for a print out on recalls for your vehicle and if the recall was performed it should be in their computer.

Finding leaks: When we look for a leak in a swimming pool we take food coloring in a hyodermic syringe and put it on the suspect leak and if it is leaking the coloring gets sucked into the leak very easy to see. Don't know if that would help find a leak on a car but just thought I'd share that trick.

Isn't there some sort of drain for the tray under the windshield wipers? Maybe its clogged up. Can you put a rag or something in the middle of the tray to create a sort of dam then take a water hose and flood one side and see if it leaks inside? That way at least you'd know if the leak is on the left or right side and narrow down the search. As for the doors I'd find a good body shop and ask them how they find door leaks and maybe they can replace the rubber moulding. Breathing all that mold and mildew is not good and it must stink bad to.
