98 Ford Escort A/C not blowing cold air

I have a 98 Ford Escort in which the A/C quit blowing cold air. I took it to a mechanic and he thought that the lines had been clogged up with debris. The compressor would kick on for a second or two and then it would shut off and then kick back on, it would do this constantly.

I took off the filter, which was only about 25% clogged, and flushed the system and filled it with r134 and I am having the same problems. The lines are cold all the way up to under the glove box but the air that comes out is ambient temperature.

Someone had mentioned that I could force the compressor switch to the on position but I don't know where to locate it or how to force it on, also would this pose any additional problems?

Any additional knowledge or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Red face Me Too!

I drive a 98 zx2. The A/C went out so I took it to M***S, to get a recharge. They told me that I probably had a large hole in my tubing and it wouldn't hold any freon. So I then took it to another place where they told me that I was full on freon and everything was running great but I was not recievieng the right amount of voltage to my compressor. They then told me to go see an electrician. My uncle told me to "trick" the switch but I also do not know where to find this, someplease help!

ive worked on AC system on escort before. Trick is, the central control module(or whatever) is broken or lacking power to engange the compressor. By taking a wire off another module and hot wiring it to the central control module where the AC wire is, you can actually over ride the central control module every time you turn on the AC system, and voila, good AC!

I have a 98 escort and my A/C has done the same thing. I had to replace the cooling fan relay switch. It is located under the air filter, it is a black box with wires connected at the front. Ford wanted $169 but I got one at the salvage yard for $20 but it went out on me 2 months later. This seems to be a common problem with 98 models.
