Antenna Mast Replacement on 2001 Chev Tahoe
Can anybody tell me how to replace the Antenna mast fon a 2001 Chev Tahoe?
I have the part which is a threaded stud which mounts behind the rt. ft 1/4 panel and then has a wire that goes down through the firewall and connects somewhere around the pass. side air bag. I took the lower dash board apart (except for right around the air bag) and could not determine where exactly the pigtail coming from the exterior connects to the wire coming from the back of the radio. Can someone please help!?!?!? |

If your trying to replace your antenna and wire. You need to remove the upper dash trim panel that surrounds your instrument panel and radio, its all one piece. Tilt steering wheel down and slowly pull on panel edges, it is just clipped on and will pop off.The radio has a clip on either side, just depress them and radio will slide out. ( I always found that funny, it say anti theft on the radio, and it takes all but a minute to get the radio out and be gone with it). With the trim panel removed and radio out, disconnect the antenna mast cable from the radio cable where they join in a connector at the far right end of the instrument panel.Attach a fish wire or string to the end of the antenna wire. You then unscrew your antenna mast. For body protection place masking tape on the fender before you unscrew the three mounting bolts. Unscrew the three bolts at your antenna base and pull the cable through till you have your fish string or wire. Attach your new antenna cable to the fish string or wire and slowly pull it through the body and over instrument panel as the original one. Installation of antenna and radio and panel , just reverse. Good luck...

Re: Antenna Mast Replacement on 2001 Chev Tahoe
Thanks for the reply! I followed your instructions (only difference was that the connector was further to the right really just behind the airbag) and got everything taken care of. The only thing I did not like was the way the grommet around the cable as it passes through the firewall did not seem to seat itself very well. I pulled and pulled and pushed from the outside but it is not the same as it was prior to me starting this.
Do you think this will cause problems down the line? Thanks again. |

Yeah, its never easy as it sounds. That grommet, I think is a split grommet. You have to seat the grommet split in the fire wall, and looking at my 2001, it really not easily accessible. It looks easier to remove the fender, but that drastic. You might try and put a little grease on the grommet or edge of the fire wall opening so it might work itself in better. If the grommet is not well seated, you may have water problems with water splashing up, or maybe a lizard problem if part of that grommet is push in or out. That would go well as your driving down the road and it crawls up your leg.Have fun...

Re: Antenna Mast Replacement on 2001 Chev Tahoe
Does anyone know if there are replacement antennas that are shorter than the originals for a 99 Tahoe?
