Usdm Rb29de

For those of you who want an I-6 like an RB26 but don't want to have to pay for parts from Japan, and also want to save money, there is a USDM I-6 from the volvo 960. It is a DOHC 2.9L with VVT-i and the intake is on the driver side, so you don't have to worry about turbos getting in the way of the steering column.
We all know that volvo makes good engines, it is a N/A, but produces around 196hp N/A, but this engine has what it takes to put out huge power gains.
I saw this engine when a lady asked me why there was a tapping sound coming from her engine. When I lifted the hood, I was impressed, but the engine is huge, probably bigger than an RB.
By the way, it has a look similar to a 2JZ or RB26 but is a 2.9 not a 3.0.
this will be a cool swap cuz you can mount a TT setup, but the only problem is Volvo 960s are not cheap cars, so expect to pay some $$$$$$.

You first say this is good for people who don't want to pay alot for japanese parts then you say that you will have to pay alot for the engine....

Anyways, the problem with that engine is everything will have to be either custom made or use a universal part because I strongly doubt the 960 has a strong presence in the aftermarket.

Re: Usdm Rb29de

True, it's just a though, I personally don't like I-6 too much, I like the capabilities of the 2JZ and RBs but, they are long, I prefer V-blocks. People say V-blocks are weaker, I really don't know.
I said it cuz you could find a vovlo 960 at a salvage yard but not a skyline, parts are readily available, and most big power turbo setups are custom works. Custom piping, custom down pipes for the big turbos, and like a 2JZ, it is setup for LHD cars. They are as advanced as the RBs, biger displacement, and are local cars. I think it will be easier to do a complete tear down on this block cuz, parts are locally available, and no shipping charges. You have to ship RBs in, and if you live in GA not like most of you in cali, we have to ship parts from there, which is double shipping. But it is just some weightless wild idea thats all.

Re: Usdm Rb29de

Well true, but ford doesn't build small displacement high performance engines, like the SHO motor was built by Yamaha for ford, and the Rx7 are built in J-land. This leads me to believe that this engine was built by a foreign maker possibly toyota or nissan, you never know, I know ford doesn't use VVTi on any of their cars so this has to be by someone else.

There's no way that Nissan or Toyota made an engine for a company that Ford has a big part in. They own a big chunk of Mazda and Nissan and Toyota are big competitors to Mazda.

Re: Usdm Rb29de

Well somebody had to do it, that engine dosn't have anything to do with ford. If ford had built it, they would have used something they are familiar with, maybe a taurus V6 since they put this motor in damn near anything that was FWD. Ford is in bed with alot of companies, and they like to contract ppl to build them things they can't, like quality engines. maybe not toyota or nissan but definately not ford.

Don't like something because of who built it, like it for what it is.

Re: Usdm Rb29de

Ford has always been good at building big engines take for example the T-bird SC, the block is the mustang V6 and they cut the last two cylinders, when it comes to power, they are good at using big displacement engines to make tons of power.
That I-6 in the volvo is not ford, someone out there made it. If I can find a picture of it, I will show you, but not too many hooked up 960s out there.

Re: Re: Usdm Rb29de

The I6 from the Volvo 960 was the first in the current modular inline engine family (4,5,and 6 cylinders.) It was a joint design project between Volvo and Porsche.

This family of engines is slated for replacement next year with a new line of more compact (in terms of length) more powerful and efficient engines. They of course also have the new Yamaha V8 that will be used in the S80 and XC90 late this year.

a funny thing about ford is too a certain extend the older and biggeer the engine the better it was made LoL weird huh

I6 is supposed to be more efficent or something like that than V6 engines

ya i get what your saying about it how usingengines such as the RBs would use alot of custom work and that people that want alot of power wouldnt be using kits and ready made set and would rather be custom making most of their parts

and fords making bad engines the Probe theres a good exampl, my friend had one always broke down and a pain in the A$$ to fix

Re: Usdm Rb29de

Thanks dollie, I actually e-mailed volvo division, went to volvos performance and enthusiast sites searching for info on this engine and no one could tell. Now I know, volvo and porche, this got to be some serious piece of machinery. I liked it cause it is USDM so everything is on the side it should be. Really don't think this swap will ever catch on but, never the less, I liked the idea, you can have a TT setup and everything will fit.
