Unhappy AF’s Issues

I would like to start in saying that this message is regrettably overdue. It has been days since many members have started having genuine fears about having their OT threads closed or even deleted. You should know that no threads will be closed or deleted in OT for the time being. If any such action occurs, it is the action of someone who is going against orders from Igor. They DO NOT represent the AF moderating staff. When their identity is unearthed, they will likely lose their moderating position, and perhaps even be banned from AF.

We are very disconcerted with the degraded member-moderator relationship of late. Contrary to common belief ( ), we are not “Nazis,” as a couple of us have been referred to as. Additionally, the negativity around the boards has definitely not been going unnoticed by the AF moderators. It is a tough time. And it seems that the source of all the trouble is post whoring.

This is a problem that has affected all large-population on-line communities at one time or another. But it is no small task to defeat. The problem with it is that it eats up bandwidth and disables the server from being able to support the userbase that AF is capable of handling. Additionally, it creates long, dragged-out threads that are meaningless to all, save for the few involved in the post whoring itself.

We ask you for your discretion. To communicate with friends, a message slipped in here or there will cause no harm, but the endless strings of messages exchanged in threads are a plague. Remember that.

We now try to balance the subtle art of moderating. Keeping order, preventing problems like this from destroying our site (make no mistake that tensions rippling out from this issue have sadly incited some members to leave AF, and many, many more to consider it, including moderators ), and maintaining a positive working relationship with a great userbase. WE ARE HERE TO HELP. Any one of us will gladly do whatever is necessary to put the pieces back together, and are happy to work with members to make this restoration effective.

This has previously been the best automotive on-line community around, and we must now take steps to restore that. Since AF has been above and beyond most other boards in handling other issues previously, it stands to reason that as we have done with other issues before, we will prevail! I am not one for making promises I can’t guarantee to keep, but AF will get through this, and return to being the board that you all signed up to be a part of.

I know this is what we all really want. If we work together, this is what we shall have. The AF moderating staff asks for your patience, compassion, and even assistance in combating this problem that affects everybody. We thank you for your time and energy.

-JD

damn too bad these rules werent around a couple months ago
a bunch of my threads, and individual posts got deleted off the face of the planet, with no reason whatsoever, it didnt cause me to want to stop, like I think their intention of deleting it was,it caused me to make even more bullshit posts, to spite whoever did it, making it harder for them to keep up with deleting, not to mention mods locking threads with no reason

im over it now, I could really care less...but I can see that you guys are working in the right direction, making the mods who close the thread give out a valid reason and such...keep up the good work

If you are going to lock/ dlete a thread then give a fucking reason not just a list of smilies!!

JD I hope things do start heading in the right direction again because good members are leaving and it is starting to get boring

That is all I shall say on this matter

Well, this has always been done by the majority of mods here. But as for OT, well, OT is OT. Things are not sipposed to be deleted here. But there is still a Mod who likes to delete things.

i originally thought off-topic was for news and views on things, not 'what did you have for dinner?'
but whatever.
AF is still good, but it can be better.

JD - thanks for the write up.

I've been on other boards where the whoring goes in cycles. It'll always be there from time to time. Whenever their is an influx of new members the whoring will be much more noticable.

I've had issues with some moderators, but never on locking or deleting threads. Thats part of what they do to help keep the sight running within the guidlines that Igor has established (even if I dont know what all of them are ) People are taking whats said in here too seriously to the point where a message from a person they dont really know is damaging their ego. Its ok to get mad and argue, but for crying out loud, if its that bad, use the ignor feature!

Overall, the mods have done fine and in most cases better then most other boards I've ever been associated with.

From time to time, I'll dissapear for a week or two, but I'll not leave because of post whoring or a mod who gets carried away. I'll only leave if the site becomes filled with boring post from unimaginative members or if the site is soley filled with guys acting like 12 year olds.

See you guys out there.

It can be defined a couple of ways...at least this is my version of the definition.

1. Posting useless threads or posts for the sake of raising your post count.

2. Posting (good or useless) replies constantly so that your average post count is 87+ posts per day In your profile somewhere it lists your average posts per day.

3. Replying to a thread just because, even if the topic doesn't relate to you and you have no other input other than just adding one more post to your count.

Sometimes it can be fun (in moderation) and there are threads for which it is appropriate for, but the problem is the over-posting starts to leak into other threads and then those threads get off of their topics. It starts to get on some people's nerves, which then escalates into other problems.

That is your opinion on post whoring. That is all post whoring is. It is one persons view on how another person goes about posting. There is no defenition f post whoring. It is just merely what one person, or a group of people think.

Just wanted this line to get noticed.
Its possibly the biggest problem facing the quality of threads in OT.
It is the single biggest reason why members might leave.
All it does is turn the forum into a hang out for a small group of very imature males, and ruins the fun, enjoyment and social aspects of the OT forum for everybody else.

Not picking on you persay moppie, but why is that the males are being singled out? While I would agree that the majority would be male, do not forget that there are two genders on this board. Maybe Yogs and yourself should have inferred young people. That way it can't be taken as in the wrong way or out of context.
