Viper 791 Installation

Okay, so we finally finished installing my alarm today....kind of... The thing is, we didn't get everything to work. It took us forever to find the right wires for the doorlocks for keyless entry and like the stupid door trigger junk doesn't work. My car's up and running and everything but sh*t....this sucks. I mean, you pay a fortune for the alarm and everything and it sucks when you don't get all the benefits.

So I'm planning to taking my car to the shop and have them pretty much redo everything. What do you guys think? Do you think they could fix our mistakes or would they just make everything worse? Damnit, I shouldn't have tried to do it ourselves.... I knew it was gonna be complicated but I didn't think it would be that bad... And my poor babie....I had to cut her up and everything....

Re: Viper 791 Installation

What all doesn't work? Is it just the trunk? Also, do you get a noise in the trunk when you try and pop it, because I have had mine installed for awhile, and now the trunk thing doesn't work anymore, if I hold the button for 3 seconds, you hear a motor or something in the trunk trying to pop it, but it fails. Yogs gave me some info on fixing this in a previous post but I don't remember what it was, but I'll find that out for you if you are having the same problem. If you are getting that same noise, then I doubt it is your wiring, but more likely the mechanism being a bit worn.

Re: Viper 791 Installation

Well, if someone was to open the door, trunk, or hood, the alarm wouldn't go off. I don't have the trunk pop either. Umm....there were also a couple of things that I was trying to do last night from the manual and a lot of them didn't work.

Re: Viper 791 Installation

Okay, so I took my car to a couple places and sheesh, they're stinkin' expensive. One place who the guy seemed to know what was going on was like my alarm system is top of the line and could do more than what a standard alarm could do. He said to install it, he would have to take out what we did and redo everything and that would be about $485. I'm like uh.....hmm....I dunno about that one.... I kinda know there are additional features and stuff but I don't know if I want to pay that much. I was reading last night and I read something like the alarm could watch how high our RPM goes and shut it off if it gets dangerous or something.

So I take it to another shop and they're like we'll charge $200 for a standard hook up. So yeah, I dunno....what do you guys think?

93_R/T_TT_Stealth, what did they charge your friend? Cause I'm willing to pay some money but not too much since I'm broke....

Re: Viper 791 Installation

So I just got back from Circuit City and they said they'd do it for about $160. So do you think the guy at the other place who wanted to charge $485 was just BSing me and trying to rip me off? Because the people at Circuit City said that it's just a regular alarm with the capability to do a lot due to it's add-ons whereas the other guy said that there are a lot of features already. He was something-certified so I was just thinking maybe he'd know more but because he's a smaller shop, I'm think that he's just trying to rip me off or something. So yeah, a bit confused here....

Re: Viper 791 Installation

Well anything certified=the right to charge 50-75 bucks an hour for labor, where as circuit city gets paid...lets say $10 an hour, no matter what. So that may be the difference in price. I have friends who work at Circuit City and other such stores and usually they know what the hell they are doing. I would trust them, and $160 is a hell of alot better than $500. Just my .02

Well, first off I must say I hate people who do what you did. It seems more often now I get people that hack the shit out of their ride just to have be try to fix it. Yes, I usually charge extra on the redo just because of all the crap I have to go through plus, it never fails that the car will have electrical problems and guess what, somehow the blame goes towards me. nuff said

So, I guess you have the Viper 791xp right? That's not just an alarm but also a remote starter too. I would guess that some of the shops were talking about hooking everything up and others just the alarm? It's real hard to say what's a fair price for the install and what isn't. I would make sure to at least find a DEI dealer to do the install. A basic install should be around $200 if they are hooking up all the door, trunk, and hood triggers. Make sure they do that. Most just skip the hood and such. Also, make sure to tip the installer personally $20 for a good job. It's even better if you do it midway through the install that way you will get the guy to make sure he is doing things right with no short cuts.

The Circuit City boys I would walk away from. Around here lets just say they've helped me out from all their abortions they performed. You gotta keep in mind that they just hire off the street for $7-$10 an hour to some punk like yourself whereas a custom shop usually has MECP cert. technicians. Remember that there's gotta be a good reason why DEI dropped Circuit City

Re: Viper 791 Installation

maybe that is just your area though - cause sounds like if you have punks an shit off the street that dont seem to know how to do anything you must live in like a crack town ghetto or something - around here all the cc's are well kept an servicing people - they know what there doing an i have seen alot of things come out of there that they did - an they did an excellent job at it - so i wouldnt go an trash the company just because the one around your town is garbage i dont know where he lives you dont know where he is plus your the only person saying they are bad an give crummy service - myself an many others including Igovert500 seem to think its a fine place to go if you have a problem plus the est. they gave him was 160 an if they will fix it for that then awsome- ya cant loose - an if they dont do it correctly or fuck it up then you dont pay them - cause payment is recieved after service an if what you were gonna pay for is not complete then why would you pay for it - simple as that ....

Re: Viper 791 Installation

and yes it should not cost almost 500 dollars for the service you need - for 500 dollars you can have a damn clutch put in an that takes alot longer than a wiring remap... cause they have everything on computers diagrams an such so it doesnt take that long they know just where to look to find what wires an what to connect an such..... i mean it should be like about 100 for an install from the very begin. an 160 sounds like its about right cause of the little screw up ya made so i would go with that if I were you...

Re: Viper 791 Installation

Oh yeah, and I know that it's an alarm and a remote start. I just thought there were other features to it that came with the package that I didn't know about so that's why I was asking. But yeah, maybe they were including the remote start feature as well so that's probably why it was more expensive. Not sure.... I also went to Best Buy and they said they'd do it for like 250-300 something-or-rather. Damn, I dunno.... LOL This is getting expensive and outta control.... Guess I'll just have to think about it somemore.....

Re: Viper 791 Installation

yeah well i would try circuit city if they are the cheapest - an like i said if they dont do what they are suposed to just tell them i was gettin it fixed for 160 like you said an if they dont fix it or if they raise the price somehow just tell them you feel you have been scandled an dont want there work - an then check best buy i know they do alot of audio shit so they prob. got good techs for alarms as well - but ya dont know till u start tryin man.... ya know

ahh, no prob. I just had to vent. You know, it's just that it isn't that big of a deal hacking on a 95 neon but the electricals on these Mitsu cars are horrid to say the least. So, when you have someone doing stuff they do not know about can really screw stuff up. People have no idea what kinda problems can be caused when you use a basic test light on a wire that uses comuter logic. That's where a $300 full digital meter comes in.

I have no prob about people "starting" somewhere but it should be with some guidance. Doctors don't just take a knife and start cutting on family members to "learn". Even after they are going through school they don't do anything alone. They have another doctor show them or assist.

As far as the pricing again, just remember you can get what you pay for. I know there are some decent installers at those big chain stores but usually once the installers get good, they go somewhere else for more money. Also, be careful on the $160 charge. Once they have your ride inside all torn apart they might say they you need this or that to complete the install and try to charge you more $$. That is very common on those chain stores. Just like they advertise the same remote starts that I sell for $199 installed for $139. Then if you have a late model car they charge another $50 for modules, $40 for keyless, $25 for light flash, $25 for trunk pop. ect. My installs include most of all of that for the same price. I don't like hooking people in on a low price then double it later once I have it.

Re: Viper 791 Installation

Yeah man, I get you. My friend knows how to work on Hondas but this was just his first time doing a 3KGT.

As far as installs go, I'm still waiting on a buddy of mine who has connections with a shop down in SoCal. I wanna get their estimate down there before I make a final decision. But umm....I'm getting estimates like 200+ up here but he says that shops down there are like only about 100 or so. Does that sound right to you guys?
