The reason it doesn't say vtec is because Honda never expected VTEC to be so popular. With VTEC's release in the US with the NSX, followed by the B17a and the D16z6, Honda soon figured out that people were pretty damn impressed with VTEC. So they started branding it everywhere... stickers, valve covers, etc.
This is all speaking with the US market. VTEC has been around in Japan since 1st Gen Integra's I think... Not sure, correct me if I'm wrong.

I was looking at an SI hatch's engine the other day, and when I didn't see the VTEC on the valve cover, I looked at the engine code on the block... I was very irritated to see D15B7... upon further inspection of the car, I noticed where there had been wiring work done in the engine bay and behind the dash.... Now this was a car at a small used car dealership I was looking at, so the nearest I can figure is that someone took the D16Z out and put a D15B in when they either sold the car or traded it in... BUT! I went ahead and looked at the engine of the Del Sol "VTEC" parked next to it... there was a D15B8 under the hood... started to wonder what was going on... looked under the hood of a GSR they had on the lot... B18B1.... I then went and reported the dealership to the B.B. DO NOT BUY CARS FROM SPORTS CITY AUTO IN Grand Prairie, TX. Try checking the code on the block though, and make sure everything is wired correctly and you do actually have VTEC. The experience with that dealer made me paranoid as shit! I even checked under my hood when I got home (Certified Used 98 Civic EX.... that's how paranoid I was).
