i have a 1998 trans am(automatic) and im wondering what kind of transmission does it come with, and what is a good replacement for it?

The 4l60E was always a good trany for me. If you are wanting to switch to a manual (which in this case would be the Tremec T56) a cheaper way to go would be putting a "reverse manual valve body" in the trans that would allow you to shift manually and still keep it clutchless. If you just want a manual you can find kits on places like yearone.org and stuff like that.

Yours is a 4L60E, you could build that into a Heavy Duty Trans (like those ones in HD Truck) with some replacement parts such as 5 pinon Planetaries, 13 van Pump, Hi-perform Clutches and Steels,
