thermostat?

I am thinking of getting either a 160 or 180 degree thermostat for my 99' WS6. if i installed it would i need to tune my computer to account for the adjust in temperature, or is it just something you plug in and it works?

Re: thermostat?

you do not need to tune your computer for a new thermostat. The computer will adjust itself for that. Its more than just a plug in job because you need to drain the antifreeze and refill it after, but other than that its a pretty simple mod

Re: thermostat?

Have you been having any overheating problems? If not, go with the 180. The lower underhood temp might help you out, but lowering the internal engine temp will cause a loss in the efficiency of the cylinder burn, losing a little power. Me personally, I would stick with the 195, but it shouldn't hurt to try the lower temps.

Re: thermostat?

i wasn't aware of that either, i guess the only time you reallly need a 160 is if you advace your spark timing too much? I don't really know. Thats a good bit of info to have. thanks.

Huh? what are you talking about. Keeping the engine beween 170 and 185 is optimal for power. Too hot and your computer will start to pull timing to keep engine temps down(or at least attempt too).

Him putting a 160 in isn't going to hurt because it doesn't open up at 160..it opens up at 175 and closes at 160. (That's according to the hypertech literature that came with the 160 thermo).

He can still run his stock fan settings...only time his fans will come on is when he's in traffic for a while.

Re: thermostat?

Dang, dude. Just trying to be helpful. He would have to be overheating for the computer to seriously pull the timing back, and that would be to avoid detonation, not to lower engine temps. In my experience, thermostats open at the temps on them, and close when the coolant drops below that temp. I'll admit I haven't seen everything, but I have been paying the bills for 15 years by working on cars. Egads, I just clicked to the fact the WS6 has ram-air. Since he's drawing outside air, underhood temps aren't going to factor in as much. Like I said, it shouldn't hurt to try the lower temps, so if it works for him, rock on!

Hey man, I didn't mean for my post to sound rough. If you took that way don't. I was just explain'n to people on here that think a 160* thermo opens at 160...it doesn't. That's all.

I also said about the coolent temp because using a friends scan tool(autotap) and then when I got my HP Tuner, the scan tools said my coolent temp gage was way off(low) When the gage said it was 175, it was really 195. when it was 210, it was 230-235

No harm no foul. You've been working on cars and thats cool. Take it easy.

Re: thermostat?

I'll try not to be so damn touchy in the future. Sorry about that. Unfortunately, manufacturers tolerances aren't as tight as we would like them to be, and things like that will continue to happen. I kinda' like what VW has began using, an electrically operated thermostat, but I wonder what the reliability on something like that would be.

Re: thermostat?

if you put a 160 thermo in than you should reprogram the ECU. with the 160 the engine doesnt reach operating temperature and will not loop out of the warm A/F mixture setting. reprogram and lower the operating temp and you will get better cooling and fuel economy, along with the more efficient running of a cooler engine...

Re: thermostat?

Hey Guys,
I have a similar question, on my Hawk, when in traffic the Fan comes on at 225 to 230 degree(I'm reading this with a Snap-on scanner)
this is a stock thermostat, the Fan suppose to run at 215 that means I’m running 10 to 15 degree hotter than I should. Is there a way to bring the temp down around 200???

Mai

Re: thermostat?

sure....put in a 160 thermo and it shouldnt even get to 200. as for the fan, you could 1. programmer or 2. fan switch.

Re: thermostat?

I think I'll try the Switch, with a 160 thermo the engine will not reach "operating temperature" that the ECU wants to see
Thanks
