Unhappy Timing Belt 95 SLS

Hello All, I have a 95 SLS and my Belt on the right side of the engine is cracking. The Belt Im talking about is not the water pump Belt or Serphentine Belt. This Belt is very thin, it is the cam belt I think? It is a rubber belt and not a chain belt. Anyone could you please tell me what I should do? Replace it myself or have dealer do it? I know i have to line up some mark or somthing like that or my timing will be off. I went to the auto parts store and they said I have to get the belt from the dealer. It is Sat and the dealership wont open till monday. Any suggestions or experiences on this.
Thanks

Your mechanical experience seems very limited. This is a labor intensive job and requires some expertise. I recommend a professional technician.

I'm sure this is way to late to help but the belt you are talking about is the water pump belt. The pump is driven off of the cam on the rear of the front side of the engine. Northstar engines have cam chains not belts.
The water pump belt is an easy fix for the DIYer.

It's going to cost close to $500 to fix, it's the timing belt.

Re: Timing Belt 95 SLS

clawhammer, a 95 SLS has a 4.6L northstar 32valve with overhead chain driven cams. no timing belt. The only belts are the serpentine and the water pump. The water pump is driven off of the rear of the engine, front of the car (drivers side front) cam you can see this belt when looking at the engine on this car. If you would like more info I can get it for you and direct you to a couple of very helpful cadillac forums that will overwhelm you with knowledge on the Northstar engine.

jgr7 is absolutely correct. it is the water pump belt which is driven off the cam. very low cost and simple to replace. and believe us, THERE IS NO TIMING BELT ON A 4.6 NORTHSTAR!!!!

I could use the info on Cadillac STS forums, I have a 98 with 84k miles on it. No problems with car. Bought it about 4 month ago. Its a real runner. Want to do my own maintainence.

thanks.

Re: Timing Belt 95 SLS

I can tell you from most recent experience, the belt you're referring to is definitely the Serphentine Belt, and if you're not really, really comfortable with a wrench in your hand, have your mechanic take care of it for you.
Good Luck
