96 Theft System

Is there a way to turn off or disable the factory theft deterrant system.

Every now and then, I'll try to start my car and it'll come on. Then I have to wait like 10min before it'll start. Only happend once in a great while to start, but seems to be getting more frequent.

Previous owner did install a remote starter that isn't working... (never did when I got it)... could that have anything to do with it.

Dealer wanted like $500 just to look at it. ($65 a hr.... probably take 5+hrs to find).... Since I don't care about it actually working... I'd just like to "turn it off"... if its possible.

Any help out there, or do I just have to pay up??

Thanks,
Jeff

There was a recall on the ignition switch/passlock system. It is probably that but could also be the remote start install too.

If there was a recall, would they still honor that on a 8yr old car???

I had same problem. When you turn the key, car starts and dies immediatly, leave the key on the on position. Do you notice a light on the instrument pannel that says theft sys, if this it the case then there is a black wire comming down from the ignition cilinder and under the dash remove the bottom pannel and disconnect it. The theft light should stay on but the car should now run fine.

Yeah,

I might try that if the light goes out and it starts again...lol. I hooked up to a Scanner & cleared all the trouble codes (history... none current) out of it. Tried to start it & it did its thing. After waiting, it started & the light hasn't gone off yet... after 2 weeks. I don't mind the light, espically since it actually starts now..lol.

I'll try your way if it starts over again.

thanks
