Question 87 non-Turbo Starting Problem

Just put in a new starter b/c the old one was bad, i have 4 sets of wires....one straight from the battery, two other sets of wires that have holes the size of the bolt on the starter, and the other wire that obviously clicks into the connector next to the bolt on the starter. When i put all three wires (power and 2 sets) onto bolt coming out of the starter, the engine cranks, can smell fuel, but it doesnt fire up. Also when they are connected, something in the engine powers up and lights come on in the dash (battery and check engine) without the key even in there. If anyone can relate or knows what I did wrong, your help is greatly appreciated. And if anyone can just look at their starters and tell me what goes where that would help a lot.
