Transmission Problem
Hi All......We've noticed lately with our 2000 Montana that when going up a hill and when it downshifts it feels like we are going over a wash board.
It does'nt shift down right away. When it has down shifted then it smooths out again. Any ideas as to what the problem may be? Awaiting your replys, with many THANKS. davey carpet |

you should bring to a dealer , has the check engine light come on? if it has any code stored should help diagnose the problem, i have seen a few lately that needed a few internal trans solenoids and possible valve body, have it checked.

I agree, sounds like you've got problems. These seem to be the same tranny problems everyone has reported with the Montana/venture/silouette. Probably a valve body. I saw you can get them rebuilt on Ebay for like 300 bucks. I believe (don't take my word on this without looking at the shop manual) the valve body on this tranny just bolts on after you take the pan and filter off from the bottom.

Thanks guys for your reply's to my post.
Will see what I can do to rectify the problem, will take your suggestions into consideration. We have just had our plugs changed and the problem showed up after the new plugs were put in, so it may be related. Will post when we have found and fixed the problem. Thanks again Davey Carpet |

Ack now I think about it mine is starting to do this also.. A small shutter during the shift 80k plus miles 1999 van Any definite fix yet?

Since our problem started the code mentioned it was the EGR valve stuck in the open position.
Clean or replace? Mechanic on holidays, waiting his return Davey Carpet |

I had this problem under warranty. It was fixed by replacing the valve body. Anytime you would give it a little gas or hit a slight incline the torque converter would unlock (which feels like a downshift). I think some of the valving in the valve body leaks and bleeds off pressure which causes the torque converter to unlock.

FYI...
Well, the transmission shop got it to throw a code--and it wasn't the transmission. It was a cylinder mis-fire. I took it back to my mechanic and he replaced the plugs and wires. That took care of the problem! Whoo hoo! |
