Seems funny that a Japanese car would be named in english, but I guess their biggest markets are Australia, UK, and USA.

If Yogs is serious about that, it is probably the worst name for a vehicle trim ever! *But I don't think he is serious

Re: what does vr4 mean
The VR4 badge was first used in Japan on the 89 Gallant when a 4WD turbo model was released to compete in Group N and Group A rallying. The driveline from this car was then used in the Lancer to create the famous Evolution range which replaced the Gallant as Mitsi's primary rally car.
The Gallant got bigger and fatter, but still retained a VR4 model. However the 4cyl 4g63 was replaced by a 3l twin turbo V6. They also got all sorts of electronic aids, and they were a variety of varients, including 2.5L V6 models, Legnum wagon versions, and even a VR4 GT model that had raised suspension and bug ugly bull bar style bumbers, and two tone paint. Quite how the US spec GTO/3000GT ended up with a VR4 name on the Turbo AWD model I have no idea, as Iv never seen it on a Jap or NZ spec GTO/3000GT. However, I have seen it in small letters on the boot lid of non-turbo 4WD V6 gallants with GLXi badges, my guess is it stands for exactly what Yogs said it does. It certianly makes sense, and fits well with the Japanese style of badging.

yes, it really does stand for viscous realtime 4
as for JDM cars, there are no VR-4s in Japan, this is what they have: SR: AWD N/A Twin Turbo: Equivelant to a U.S. VR-4 MR: same as the Twin Turbo, except it weighs less, and had the option of 13g turbos, which would explain why they run 12.7 in the 1/4 at stock boost levels. I think i once heard that they are mid engined if anyone can confirm if they are or not.

Re: what does vr4 mean
viscous coupling is a type of differential that links your front and rear so if the front or rear start breaking loose and lose traction, the torque is transfered to the other set to allow the wheels without traction to lock up again. Realtime-4(AWD, not part-time 4WD).
To learn more about differentials: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm And just go through all the pages, it is really easy to understand, and helped me the first time. Or to simply skip to viscous coupling: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential9.htm

The HSX brocure says VR4 stands for viscous realtime all wheel drive with 4 wheel steering.
That explains why the galant is a VR4 and the eclipse is not, dispite being a vicous coupled AWD system. |

Re: what does vr4 mean
slightly off post but the mitsu evolutions had a model called the FQ350 or FQ300 and i laughed my head off when i was told why it was called that.
this is gospel and it meant f***ing quick 350hp i think its the japanese sense of humour.
