Rebuilding tranny... Need Help

My 95 talon esi 5spd is leaking transmission fluid. After close inspection of the tranny, the cap on the far right of the engine seems to be the problem. A friend who's a mechanic said that the gasket between the tranny and the cap might be cracked or worn out.

He told me that I can easily rebuild that by taking off the tire, removing the cap, replacing the gasket with a silicone-based gasket(?) and putting it all back together. Sounds easy.

I have the Haynes(?) book for the car, but it doesnt say anything about replacing that piece. Has anyone does this? Is this going to fail misserably for me? I'm no mechanic, but I do work a ot on cars. Is it going to be this easy? Please help me. Thanks a whole lot.

Dave

Well, I'm not sure as my knowledge of your particular application is limited, but i think that if you were to go to a mitsu dealer and ask for that part, they would be able to order it for you. It's not something that will be at auto zone. As far as using gasket in a can or something like that. I have little faith in that stuff as far as something that is hard to get to, and will be taken off frequently. But if you can get to it alright and make a nice even spread you might be alright with that. Just be careful not to get any in the trans. Good luck

Re: Rebuilding tranny... Need Help

Yeah. I actually decided not to do it yet. Im going to hold off for now. I figure that Ill prob mess it up and have to spend more on fixing that than if I just fixed the problem professionally in the 1st place. Ill have to see how much everything is going to cost. Until then, Ill just fill up tranny fluid and let it drip.

Re: Rebuilding tranny... Need Help

I sometimes do this. I mostly just throw it to neutral before i start stopping. I don't think that should harm the tranny. Your barley even using it, so it should be ok
