Electric Fan...
Thinking of putting in an electric fan on my Zed... what are your thoughts? I heard this can free up some ponies, but I also heard that they have a low-life span? I also heard that the adjustable thermostat controlled fans can be a lil' dangerous? What would an ideal temp be set at?

Z32s come with clutch fans, too? Didn't know that. I'm going to put an e-fan on my car asap. I've never heard of anyone having any trouble with them and you do free up a good amount of power. You just have to make sure you get a good one that pulls enough air. Look for as close to 3000 cfm as you can get...if not more. That should be plenty flow. I don't know what size your car can handle.

ours is connected to the crankshaft pulley (don't know the technical name for it) so it is spinning all the time when the engine is on. i think that is how it works. what i want to do is put that little fan in front of the radiator on a switch because stock, it only turns on when it is really really hot, and i would like it on all the time to keep things cooler.

I believe that the adjustable are more sought after, however. This has something to do with a longer lifespan... if it is on constanttly it will go out quicker.

I never really stared at a VG while its running but I can't really imagine that they wouldn't have a clutch fan. I know you can spin shaft free of the blades...whatever...

I know that on the Z32s, the fan is on the water pump pulley, and I'm pretty sure that like most fans I've seen, it uses a viscous coupling between the driving shaft and the fan itself. As the water pump heats up (due to the engine heating up), it heats up the viscous fluid inside the coupling, making it less viscous, which means less power transmitted to the fan itself. A cheap and easy way of regulating the engine temperature.
But yeah, electric fans rock. I've got 2. It also gets rid of some of my engine bay clutter too. -Mike -Mike |

aren't they pretty expensive though it appeared that it would cost me upwards of $200 just to get one for my 91 chevy truck which is usually cheap to get parts for ie$300 lsd's

on the amz performance site they have some good looking fans. Also about that little fan in front that only comes on under REALLY hot situations, I want to redo that one too because i can't even spin it free hand and that makes me a little nervous. You can usually do that with any fan. oh well, we'll see

The little fan in front of you're radiator is actually the a/c fan, it has nothing to do with the engine cooling system. if you want to switch to an electric radiator fan, look for something in the area of 2,250+ cfpm. Flex-a-light, ect,ect,ect.

the little fan is the accesory fan. it turns on when your engine is really hot. i have never ever heard it being your a/c fan. why would your a/c need a fan?

In the front of a z31, and i believe the z32 operates the same, their are what apears to be 2 radiators (3 if it has an oil or auto trans cooler,wich will be 1/4th the size if a radiator). The frontmost one is actually an a/c condensor. The little pusher fan in front of it is the a/c condensor fan, used to cool the a/c freon back into a colder liquid form.
Engine cooling fans are almost always puller fans, located after the radiator, and either belt driven clutch fans or shrouded elecric fans.
