Question Oil Usage on `02 LS1???

My service advisor tells me that it is normal for my car to "use" up to a quart of oil per 1500 miles. Is this guy legit, or is he just trying to save himself the hassle of the warranty repair? Thanks!

I'm not to familiar with ls1's. but i don't think that ir is NORMAL for any motor to use 1 quart of oil every 1500 miles, thats like as bas as my samurai, look for oil seepage outta the motor, like around the pan, and so fourth, them he can't deny it.

I've heard that the 00-01 LS1's use the hell out of oil. It's a sports car, but as far as normal goes, they are on crack!!!! Good luck getting anything done about it. To me, that's not normal. But, what are you going to get them to do????

It doesnt sound unresonable. My SUV is rated to burn 1 quart per 1000 miles.

Is the LS1 an all aluminum engine or no?? If it is that might explain some of the oil usage because I think it expands more and would require more tolerance so it might burn some extra while its cold.

Re: Oil Usage on `02 LS1???

there is a known problem with LS1 engines, especially in manual trans equipped F and Y bodies. its due to faulty piston rings. there is a bullitin out on this problem, your chevy dealership should be able to pull it up. and then they have to do an oil consumption test. i dont recall off the top of my head, what the numbers are, but this is a problem, and chevy knows it. id take it back and ask them to look up the bullitin.

Re: Oil Usage on `02 LS1???

Does anyone know where I might be able to get that bulletin myself?

Oh yeah, here's an interesting bit of info... My car was already a manfacturer buyback a.k.a. LEMON for issues with oil consumption. The dealer I bought it from got it direct from GM after "recertification" or something like that.

Re: Oil Usage on `02 LS1???

that buyback might have been before the bullitin came out recognizing it as a problem. now it shouldnt be an issue. if your dealership plays dumb and says they cant find it, ill get the bullitin number for you from work, im a chevy tech.... at least till the end of this month. and i can send it to you.
