K & N KIT

Has anyone installed a K&N air intake kit on a XJ? Would you recommend it? I'm looking to install it on a 1997 XJ 130k mi.

Well i have a Rusty's air tube and K&N filter on the way and should be here tomorrow, so after i intall that i'll let you know how it goes. But after just looking at the prices i wouldn't recommend the K&N air intake kit. I mean there can't be that big of a difference between the new tube it comes with and just using the stock tube thats already in your XJ. The kit i got uses the stock tube but has an aftermarket metal tube that connects to the end of the factory tube and then the new K&N filter goes onto the other end of the new tube. So u still get the performance of the K&N filter, it is still a cold-air intake system and it costs much less. I spend 90 bucks including shipping for the tube and a K&N 6x9 filter. It will require less work AND money than doing the more expensive kit from K&N. YES! My 00 XJ has the K&N filter w/ tube installed on my 4.0. It does make a differance. Only thing that I have noticed is that if you are off-roading in dusty conditions, ie. beach, it'll need cleaned more requently. if you install the K&N you will definatly notice a differance. There are a lot of substitutes out ther, but K&N is one of the best on the market.

May I also recommend a Dynomax cat-back system or an Magna flow muffler. You'll have more air getting into the engine, now you need to get the engine to "breath" better.

The stock tube is actually working against what your trying to do, all those "ribs" in the flex area cause turbulance, and restriction. Also look at whats around your filter, its picking up the heat fromthe engine, if you want to isolate the filter from the heat you need to create a divider between the 2.K&N includes this divider in its kit. Then you'll have the closest thing to a cold-air intake for an XJ.

I forgot to mention that i will be fabricating a divider from to put there from a peice of sunvisor that you put in your windshield. A guy from jeepforum.com recommended it and even showed a few pics and says it works like a charm. So there is my heat divider that costs about 5 bucks opposed to whatever the K&N tube costs, and about the ripples in the hose, oh well, can those really make THAT big of a difference, i mean these tubes don't put out an extra 10 horsepower just from a straight tube, most of the extra horsepower is coming from the K&N filter.

Well i got the filter and tube today and got it installed and WOW does it look awesome. The big 6x9 filter i got sure does look bad ass. Of course it probably would look cooler with one of the K&N tubes on it though, but i was a little low on cash so oh well. The install went pretty easy although now when i drive there is a whistling sound (almost like if you were puttin on the brakes) at around 2000 rpms, and then it goes away... What could this be?

thats the way it is,by eliminating the horn at the filter housing you will have the noise..just have to live with it..my k&n fipk system does not do that.i had a rustys on there at one and it made the swooshing noise..hope this helps

Not sure with the Rusty's kit, but the K&N fipk does make a Whoosing sound, but its really not that noticable unless you really get into it. If you can I would suggest saving some $$ and get the K&N fipk. It's worth the $$, I've had mine in my jeep for 54,000 miles. Been erverywhere, beach, mud,dust. Same filter, tube. I think you'll be surprised at the differance. Remember looks, are just that, but performance, there is no substitute!

I have a KN air and oil filter on my 2001 XJ. I noticed that my plugs are cleaner, and i have a little more get up and go. The oil filter has the spring valve in it, so no more dry starts anymore with the oil stay up top now.KN is AAAA+++++

Simple science to me...you might get the claimed 10 or 15 hp boost with a K&N filter but does it keep the small particals out of your engine while it lets all that air by. Bottom Line! I challenge any K&N rep to provide this scientist with data proving their K&N filter does filter out smallest particals as well as lets say a Fram extra life series filter. I haven't seen any good studies thus far. Actually I've read about the lack of documentation.

I had a K&N filter in my cherokee Ltd and removed it. I just don't trust it to keep the small particles out of my engine. As far as I'm concerned I'll sacrifice to 10 Hp boost for engine endurance through decreased contamination. My cherokee isn't a rod and I don't rework the engine after every run.


Anyway, if you want a good mix of increased power and fuel economy...draft a semi! .........at your own risk!
