91 camry leaking antifreeze
My 91 camry is leaking antifreeze around the timing belt area. It has a real bad sound when running...as if ball bearings went bad, coming from inside of the engine manifold. I took off the two belts needed to run the water pump, power stearing pump, and the alternator. Still making the horrible sound. There is no water on the dip stick when I check the oil. I know that its not a catastrophic problem because the engine still runs and there is no water in the oil pan. I know its not the water pump, power stearing pump or the alternator making the noise. Please give me some idea's of what it might be. Thank you very much.

Re: 91 camry leaking antifreeze
leaking around timing belt and making sound when running that is a water pump problem. Water pump is control by timing belt not the two belt from out side.

Re: 91 camry leaking antifreeze
It is the water pump and if you are hearing it it will break soon. And since it is one of the pulleys for the timing belt, that will fail and you will be stuck.
The only ways I've broken a belt is the pump and the tensioner. Get it all done when your in there and you'll be good for a 100k or more. The parts are very cheap. Even if someone else does it for you buy the parts yourself. Not more than $150 in labor even at most dealers. |

The drive belts you mention drive the air conditioner compressor, alternator, and power steering pump.
Yep, it sounds like the water pump about to fail. As mentioned, that is driven by the timing belt. Have them replace the timing belt when they replace the water pump. Good idea to replace the other two accessory belts, too. Doesn't add anything to labor cost. |

Thank you for all your help. Water pump was in bad shape. Changed that and the timing belt this weekend. Works great now. My mistake thinking the water pump was outside of the timing belt case. Your right, I was looking at the AC, power steering, and alternator. My bad. Thanks again.
