Was woundering

hey guy's. i know this might not be the forum to ask but i figured you guy's would know. lol ok here i go:
1, do the laser/radar detectors work?
2, i have heard that police have laser/radar detectors (like they know if you have one) and are more likely to ticket you if you have one, do they?

Re: Was woundering

i think the only state their are illegal is virgina, cause when ever you see one for sale, it says something about not for use in the state of virgina or something.

Re: Was woundering

Radars are illegal in VA. I believe they ticket you for it and confiscate it. I am sure it is not a felony.

I am anti-radar. I speed where I know the roads and/or the police. If I am on long trips, I find peopel to tail or I take educated risks on where to make time.

In Pennsylvania (where I'm at), only the state troopers are allowed to use radar. The locals are not, so there is little point in having a detector here. 90% of our roads a radar isn't used on

Re: Was woundering

All sorts of things ...

*freely speed on divided highways with a solid gaurd rail on both sides (no place for police)
*no speeding past bridges/exits
*only speed when I have a seriously clear view of the road for a long distance ahead
*trail faster speeders, if there are any
*slow down when others are braking ahead for no apparent reason (maybe be an actual cop or a known cop spot)

Hypothetically speaking, If I were a "speeder", I would usually travel 5-10 mph over what is posted. If I was trying to make time, I would use the above tips to go 10-20mph over.

Re: Was woundering

i dont think the trailing other speeders works. In fact ive seen in not work. i was speeding down a road, doing about 50 in a 35 MPH, i had a car behind me speeding with me. Well their was a cop, i didnt see the cop so i didnt hit the brakes, so neither did the guy behind me, wanna take a guess as to who got pulled over? the guy behind me, i just kept driving.

Re: Was woundering

Well, last summer, while trailing a white Celica at 115 - 120 mph on a expressway ...staying a good 1/4 mile or so back. Just enough to keep him within eye shot which was easy to do since it was early morning and there was very little traffic.

... he got nailed hard. There was cop sitting on a bridge. The cop was clearly visible form a 1/4 mile away ... you could not tel lit was a cop, but you
could tell it was a car on a bridge.

The Celica was pulled over.

Re: Was woundering

Well to answer the original posters question:
Yes they do work...but they aren't invincible. After owning one for the past 4 or so years, it has saved me from a good 100 or so speeding tickets. But on the other hand I have gotten pulled over at least 5 times with it in the car, so it isn't invincible. I still stay alert and use commonsense. The radar detector helps in addition to those, but isn't a replacement for alertness or commonsense.

I've heard the rumors about radar detector detectors...mine had some kind of 'invisibility' feature, but even if the cops don't have a rd detector, it is somewhat obvious when you are flying and then nail the brakes the second their radar has you in it's sights. They help detect radar up ahead, but if the cop doesn't turn his gun on until he has you in his sights, the detector wont help at all, then it is too late.
They are illegal in some states to own, and thier use is prohibited in others, (i've seen signs prohibiting use in NY) but I don't know if that is cop intimidation tactics or what. If I get pulled over with one in my car, I always unplug it and toss it under the passenger seat while going for my registration in the glove box.
If you are getting one, get a valentine, they are liek 300-400 bucks, but I've heard amazing things about them from tons of people.

Re: Was woundering

one thing with radar detectors dont go cheap. I had a cheap one 80 bucks from best buy. Ugh it was horrible to drive in the city with it, cause it would constantly get set off by automatic sliding doors on buildings. They use radar so it gets picked up. Also i got a weird feedback from it, the higher the RPMS got, the louder is made this high pitch noise. . .very annoying so i just returned it and got my money back. If your gonna get one, buy one from like best buy and try it out, if you dont like it return it, i think its got a 30 day or 14 day money back return policy.
