In France, we've 12 points on our drinving licence (since 1992). For a "wrong way" (4pts), a red light (4pts), a speed ticket (1 point : + 20km/h) and alcohol (6 pts), my driving licence could be canceled, but I'm going to do a training period of 2 days to have 4 pts back. After 3 years without a fine (with points), you get back your 12 points.
My question, how does it work in your country ? Do you have this system of points ? Are the police controls strongers now than before ? I remember only 2 or 3 years ago, over here, on the highway, the average speed was 170-180kmh (110mph), now, it's 130-140kmh (130kmh/82mph is the speed limit) and even slower. Same thing on other roads. And for alcohol, you could drive 20 years without having a control. Now, controls are everywhere ! So, what's up in your country (United States or elsewhere) ?

Re: I've almost lost my driving licence.
Canada varies from province to province.
Ontario is fairly typical, where we have (I think) 15 points. You can lose 2 pts for disobey a sign, (stop, yield, etc), 20 km/h over is 2 pts, and goes up from there. 60 km/h over is 6 points, careless driving is 6 pts. Drinking: blow .05 over and its a 12 hr licence suspension. blow .08 or more and its a manditory immediate 90 day licence suspension (whether you are guilty or not) and criminal charges. I am a bit hazy on some of the details, as I have not lost any points in 22 years, and I have had no tickets in 15 years. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough.
