Front axle shaft seals

I have a 98 cherokee with a small seep on the right side. Looks like the seal is starting to go. I have the 5-speed so it has 307 gears. How do you install the seal? Does it go in from the outside or does it go in from the inside.

Re: Front axle shaft seals

If the axle seals are like most other front axles, the seals are just out side of the differential side bearings.

to change them you have to remove the ring gear and carrier.

Mark the bearing caps for left and right side and dont mix up the bearing cups and the shims if you do change them yourself.

Re: Front axle shaft seals

Thanks for the info. I guess I will keep an eye on the problem and see if it gets bad. It might just find itself at the dealer.
