Angry 4L60E transmission won't shift into reverse!

My '98 Tahoe suddenly decided not to shift into reverse today. There were several days of loud clunking noises leading up to this and one loud episode as it was backing up today. And that was it! The forward gears, including 4WD, all seem to work, but not reverse. any input would be appreciated, including suggestions and repair costs. Thanks.

Hi there. I had a similar experience with my 98 tahoe last year. While accellerating down the road one morning, my car experienced a surge and a loud noise. After that my reverse quit working.

Upon calling around, I found out that this was a common problem. According to the technician at a Mr. Transmission, the 'sunshell' inside the transmission is prone to failure. In my case, a transmission rebuild was required to correct the problem.

Much to my surprise, while calling around I found a transmission shop that was currently working on a 98 tahoe with the EXACT SAME PROBLEM.

The total cost was $1500 for my rebuild.

Yeah, things aren't looking good. I've been checking around the local shops and it will probably get expensive. Makes me wish I could replace this 4L60E with an Allison 1000 like my truck has. Sure wish I knew about these problems before I bought the Tahoe. Thanks for your thoughts.
