How to mod a 3000GT

Hey Guys. Im brand new to the forum, im *sorta* new to car modding (I can do the basics myself, and i know all the mechanical theory..), and im brand new to tryin to set my next car up to be a racer.

Ive got my eye on a pretty 1993 3000GT VR4....
Only car ive ever modded was a Talon, and then a 94 Eclipse (Neither mine, but a friend has a mini-garage set up in his... bigass garage. poor pneumatic crane almost died lifting engine out.

Id like to know how feasible it is, on a budget of a max of $4 on mods alone, to turn my soon-to-be 3000GT into a beast?

What sort of a mods do 3000GTs benifit most from.. what are their major restrictions.. What should i do? I really have my heart set on getting this car, as its so goddamn beautiful, so im praying its also race-worthy.

with 4 bucks huh? well you could prolly go to a hardware store, buy some tubing and make a CAI. Give you like 5 HP more. Wont make it a beast, but might make it feel faster, if not a little louder. . .

The 3000GT section of this forum is the place to post this, but yea I have one and love it, the only peoblem is the aftermarket is a bit lacking for how good the car is because it dosent enjoy as much fame as the supra or skyline. Go check out the mitsubishi section and click on 3000GT, then search for info on the modding possibities.

Re: How to mod a 3000GT

Well im sure this will be moved to the correct place, to begin with the 93 vr4 is a beast. It comes with 9-10psi stock, do the free boost mod here:
http://www.stealth316.com/2-freeboost.htm

and you'll be running about 12psi(what the 94-99s ran stock). Then you gut your precats=free
Then you get a LS6 MAFT=200-400, then you get a downpipe=$330, and a boost controller($20-500) and up the boost to 14.5psi. And get a testpipe on ebay for $30. Now you are well over 400hp at the crank, running mid 12s in the 1/4 at least and are technically pretty damn fast and spent less than a grand...now it gets interesting. As thoroun pointed out, there isn't too big of an aftermarket/none at all to get your car running lower than 10 seconds in the 1/4. But with that left over 3 grand, get larger turbos, save a bit more cash and get an air/fuel controller~$350-500, 720cc injectors, and a larger fuel pump. Now you've spent about 5k, and are running 11sec 1/4s. Possibly into the 10s if you are damn amazing(4 or so people have managed it). There are plenty of other mods that you will need to run 10s, most of them simply supporting the boost you are making. The stock clutch wont last much past 400hp at the crank, you'll get spark blowout and have to regap/replace the plugs with copper ones, just to mention a few...damn I wrote alot. So visit the 3000gt forum for more specific questions. And check out this site:
www.3sxperformance.com for parts.
Hope this helps

Re: How to mod a 3000GT

I want a 3000gt/Stealth
Anyways, my question for the original postee is, do you want to make a track beast or street beast? If your going for the Street beats, it's already done...maybe IHE and your set...but for track, there are numerous things to do, and now you will find the right ppl since its moved to the right forum

Re: How to mod a 3000GT

As for track the suspension is a main factor! But for street a few bolt on will do.

Do you think I could install an exahust myself? Is there welding involved or is it all bolts that hold it togeather?

Re: How to mod a 3000GT

Most aftermarket exhausts are bolt/clamped on. I think with a bit of knowledge and 4 ramps to get the car high enough up, you could manage yourself.

This isn't the most helpful/descriptive page, but it may help a little in giving you an idea of how to support the exhaust and align it and such. Keep in mind, a borla or atr or something of that nature will not need the welding or fabrication that this guy went through.
