Code Tester?
I need to buy a code machine as I own a 1996 Tahoe and a 1998 Suburban. Can any one help me with information on which brand to buy. I would also like to know what test functions is waste of money with the testers. Some sell for $100.00 and some 500.00. Should I buy new one eBay? I would only use it for the two vehicles. Where does it plug in at? Thanks Dave

Re: Code Tester?
I just bought a code reader from Pepboys for about $200 and I think the maker is actron.
From what I know, it all depends on what you want the reader to do. The cheaper ones just read the codes and that's it and the more you pay, the more features you get. The one I got reads the codes, allows you to see realtime engine data while the engine is running, read the "freeze frame data" which is a snapshot of data that is taken when certain codes are set. I know there is a company, AutoTap I think, sells software and the required hardware for a PC laptop to connect to the cars computer for a round $300. For what I've read about it, it looks like you could have the same capabilties of a dealership when it comes to plugging into a cars computer. |

Re: Code Tester?
Be aware if you buy Hypertech or a Predator scanner/computer you will only be able to use it on one of the vehicles. As I understand it they lock in your VIN # and will not work with any other vehicle than the original one plugged in to.

Re: Code Tester?
I have Autotap and really like it. It reads DTCs but also gives you plotting, gauges, etc to monitor engine functions while running. Great if you're trying to diagnose a problem. The only thing it doesn't give you that the dealer has is 2-way communication. This would allow you to set actuators (like the IAC stepper motor, etc) for certain diagnostic tests. For the money though, its a great tool for a do-it-yourselfer. Be warned though, if you're not familiar with OBDII, the DTCs can be pretty cryptic, and won't always tell you exactly what to replace etc.
