How to replace drive belt on 2001 Grand Prix GT
Just replaced the drive belt on my 1996 Cavalier thanks to instruction found on the Cavalier forum (and a low profile rachect from Sears). Now I want to do the belt on my wife's 2001 Grand Prix GT. But I am not sure of which is the belt tensioner as I tried to turn the idler pulley hex bolt on both directions and it didn't yield any slack (I didn't use force as with my cavalier, the belt came off easily).
Is belt tensioner=idler pulley? what direction should I turn to loose the belt? BTW, I will use the Goodyear Poly-V gatorback belt from Autozone. |

Re: How to replace drive belt on 2001 Grand Prix GT
The tensioner pulley will be located on the end of a spring loaded tensioner(like the one on the Cavalier)while the idler pulley will be fixed. The tensioner pulley will have a place for either a rachet or special tool to fit that allows you to move it to loosen or place tension on the belt. To see which direction to move the tensioner look at the way it is pressing on the belt. It should move easily in the direction that will remove tension from the belt. Sorry for the simplistic explanation but that is the only way I know how to describe the precedure.

There are 6 pullies connected by the serpentine belt and according to the routing diagram, they are labeled as water pump, crank, idler, AC, power steering, and alternator. Is the tensioner pulley one of 6 above? Or is belt tensioner somewhere nearby. |

Red line points to the tensioner bolt. Put your wrench, or breaker bar and socket, here and push in the direction of the arrow (toward the fire wall).
