95 Blazer EGR valve problems

I have a 95 blazer with 159k miles that has repeated problems with the EGR valve. It has been replaced several times, but it doesn't stay "fixed" for long. The SES comes on an goes off after a day or so. I have low power off a start and it makes a low, hollow, thumping sound when accellerating after a stop. It runs fine above 25mph. I have very limited knowledge of engine repair, but am willing to learn.

First, run a can of seafoam through the system... 1/3 into the brake booster vac hose, immediately shut off the car for one hour, 1/3 into the crank case (do oil change 500 miles later) 1/3 into the gas tank... After the hour is up, drive around for about 5 miles until the smoke clears...Next
pull off the EGR, make sure it's clean (doubt you actually NEEDED to replace the others, make sure it's clean and the pintle moves freely... Next, take a look at the egr port on the manifold itself, pick out the surrounding carbon with a screwdriver... After you've done that run the car for a couple of mins with the EGR off and rev it to blow any debri out... Replace EGR... Disconnect negative battery terminal for 15 minutes to clear ecm...

If you continue to get egr codes set after this procedure, pull your upper plenum, clean the egr port in the bottom portion of the intake... This is what gets really really clogged and tends to set the code...Then install the EGR mod... Gives better torque at low to mid range rpm's, increases gas miledge, but more importantly will help prevent carbon from clogging your EGR... It says on the page for pre 94, but it's a typo and it works for 95

Ok, this may sound like a dumb question, but what is "seafoam" and where do I get it? Where is the brake booster vac hose?

Note - I have to "stand" on the brake pedal to slow down...much more force than I think I should have, but brake pads are new.

Thanks!

Re: 95 Blazer EGR valve problems

First off, sounds like your brakes need bleeding (you have air inside them, even after new pads you shouldn't be standing on them)

Second, seafoam is a carbon cleaner available at NAPA or Advance autoparts...

The brake booster is the big black round thing (about 10" in diameter) that is attached to your master cylinder (where you put in your brake fluid) you will see a 3/4" hose coming off it.. Pull that hose and pour 1/3rd of the can in there while it's running (expect smoke out your tail pipe) shut the car down for an hour... Drive 5 miles without revving, just drive normally...

Re: 95 Blazer EGR valve problems

Greetings Rlith!

Question? Will the egr mod you mentioned work on a 1994 s-10 blazer and what exactly are the benefits...Im new just got mine...tnx

Also, Ive seen these speed ships on ebay, do they work as they say and not damage your engine?

Hi Everyone, I hope all your problems are fixed by now, but I had the same problem with my 94 blazer. The reason you have to stand on the brakes is because the brake system works with the vacuum created by the engine running smoothly. What I had to do, and it sounds crazy, but to stop I had to apply the gas while braking. This brings the rpm's of the engine up, smoothing the engine out, and allows the vacuum braking to work properly. I cleaned out the egr ports with carb cleaner and replace the egr valve and it seemed to do the trick.

Ys, anytime you have an EGR valve problem, you DON'T HAVE TO REPLACE IT!

Remove it, clean out the carbon chunks and reinstall.

Good as new.

Exclamation Re: 95 Blazer EGR valve problems

Hi, I'm having problems with my EGR. I took it off to clean it and sure enough, there was a big chunk of carbon holding it open. I cleaned it out but in the process the pintle went all the way in and now its stuck in that position. Does this mean I need to get a new one or will it release itself?

It should be closed until the engine sends the signal for it to open. Are you still getting the SES or Check Engine light when you drive it? Did you remember to unhook the battery to reset the code?
