HELP! '81 320i 5spd- Intermitent No Start/No Spark Condition

Hi,

I would appreciate if anyone can help me with the problem I am having with a 1981 BMW 320i 5spd w/ about 160k miles.

The engine starts up fine when it is cold (other than how it runs when it starts i.e. erratic idle, almost stalls...), but when the engine is brought to operating temp. or when ambient outdoor temps. are high, the engine cranks, but will not turn over. I checked for ignition spark and nada... The ignitor was changed about two years ago per owner, but checked and o.k. although it was installed wrong haphazardly. I also noticed the electrical system had been checked before due to the wire looms being sliced and the wires being pierced. I don't have much experience with BMW's or Euros for that matter, I suggested to the owner that it might be the pick-up coil inside the distributor housing, and also suggested he replace the ignition cap and rotor to start due to wear.

If anyone has any suggestions or knowledge with this matter, Please contact me via e-mail or private message

Thanks All!!!

the pick-up coils do go 'open' especially when the engine's hot and cause your symptoms. the distributors also fail completely, but when they do as the engine warms up, you'll begin to hear a howling, screeching noise that will the turn to a load buzzing - it'll sound like the transmission's going to explode, then you'll smell burning oil which is cooking off the dist. housing and rear cyl. head cover from the dist. overheating so badly.

it's really something everyone should experience at least once.............................................. .....jb.
