I have a 99 Grand Prix GT with 138,000 miles on it. The service engine light keeps shutting off and turning back on. Whenever im going up a hill and im at 2000-2500RPM the thing jerks pretty fast or when im maintaining my speed and push the gas down a little further it hesitates and jerks until i put it to the floor then it downshifts and quits jerking. My dad just took the throttle body out and EGR valve and cleaned them but it still does it. What is the problem???

Not sure where your from, but if you have a Auto Zone they will scan your car for the SES code for free and then it will help us with your problem.....~Larry~

Re: Hesitation and Service Engine Light
I have a 98 GTP with 77,000 miles. I'm having the same problem, hit the gas it hesitates and when I'm driving around 50miles hr it jerks sometimes. When I stand behind my exhaust I hear a putt-putt sound , sounds like it's missing. My accelaration is terrible.
All this started when the asshole at the gas station put regular unleaded instead of super in my tank. I dont know if that caused the problems but after I got the gas and drove about 30miles, all hell broke loose. |

Re: Hesitation and Service Engine Light
I got it checked out and the guy said that the gas cap may be loose but its still kind of hesitant and when I go really fast and park the car and get out, I can smell burning oil, I don't know what thats all about. Id like to get rid of it and get a GTP or a Formula. But is it a good idea to drive the Formula in the winter? Id hate to make payments on a car thats gonna sit in the garage for 4 months

I had the exact same symptoms a couple years back with my Astro van, a mechanic friends suggested changing the fuel filter...but I figured it (filter) was only a year old and didn't need to be replaced. Finally changed the $8 filter, the back tires spun and the check engine light stayed off.

Re: Hesitation and Service Engine Light
Well I sold the car last night, I would like to get a Formula, Trans Am, GTP, Camaro Z28, or a Silverado 1500 LT. But is it a good idea to drive a Formula, Trans Am or a Z28 in the winter? I dont want to pay for a car thats gonna sit in the garage all winter.

Re: Hesitation and Service Engine Light
I changed the fuel filter, and added water evaporater in fuel. I did this 3 times and no more hesitation. You can check the fuel pressure with a gage on the fuel log, mine was at 42lbs. When i changed fuel filter it went up to 48lbs. No more problems...
